Bunnery Natural Foods Breakfast Variety Sampler, 5.25-Pound

Bunnery Natural Foods Breakfast Variety Sampler, 5.25-PoundAll the family is a fan of granola. We have tried many different brands over the past two years, and the children choose those from The Bunnery in Jackson Hole as the best, far better than Bear Naked and Kashi, etc.

They are the perfect balance of sweet and sour, with the delicate taste of the different grains. They also stay fresh and crunchy for a good 6 months.

I also like the pancake and waffle mix with oats, sunlowers seeds and millet. You add some honey and you feel that you're starting your day at your phycal best.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program This was a great assortment of four kinds of granola, a natural oatmeal blend and a whole grain pancake and waffle mix. The granola was addictive even after I'd finished it, I'd find myself wanting a bowl. It was naturally sweet, crunchy, nutty and wonderful. My favorite of the four flavors was the blueberry the cinnamon was not too overpowering, and it had a fair amount of blueberries in it. I'll be buying more of it.

The oatmeal is heavy duty these aren't flakes, but ground oats mixed with sunflower seeds and some whole grains. It swells up, so take half of what you think you can eat and allow for twice the milk you think you need to add. It's a great, stick to your ribs way to start the day.

The pancake and waffle mix was also full of cracked grains and sunflower seeds (not an overwhelming amount.) I was afraid the cakes would be heavy, but with a little extra milk they created a fluffy cake with a nice little crunch to it. I highly recommend giving this a try, because this mix turns the guilty pleasure of pancakes into a healthful, satisfying choice for breakfast.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program As one might expect in a variety pack, there will be, well, a variety of responses. I haven't finished and will update as I get to them all, but here's what's what so far:

Original Granola: My wife found it too sweet and powdery. I didn't think it overly sweet, but agreed on the powdery part. We both prefer our granola to be chunkier, bite-size pieces with some heft/crunch to them. Not sure if this is an isolated or a shipping issue, but this bag was mostly pulverized granola. Taste was good, but nothing out of the ordinary. A few serving facts:

120 calories 25 mg of sodium (seemed a bit high) 5 gr. of sugar 3 g of protein

Ingredients: Oats, honey, sunflower seeds, coconut( couldn't really taste), canola oil, sesame seeds, walnuts, water, almonds, salt, cinnamon (couldn't really taste), cloves

Banana honey-nut: We both found this one a bit sweet. Much better consistency with lots of bite-sized chunks. Liked the taste better than the regular.

120 cal 6 g fat 25 mg sodium 5 g sugar 3 g of protein

Ingredients: Oats, honey, brown rice syrup, sunflower seeds, coconut( couldn't really taste), canola oil, sesame seeds, walnuts, dehydrated bananas, water, almonds, salt, cinnamon (couldn't really taste), cloves

Cranberry nut: My personal favorite. Not too sweet, very nice taste with hints of vanilla rather than overpowering. Also good bite-sized chunks. Same nutrition. Same ingredients as above save rather than bananas it has cranberries (go figure) and vanilla extract.

Blueberry: No too sweet, has a blueberry taste but while it isn't bad, I didn't care much for it. Good bite-sized chunks. Same nutrition, save for, well, you can figure it out

oatmeal: taste is OK, I kind of liked it, but it wouldn't be my first reach on the shelf for oatmeal. I did like the sunflower taste and consistency. Directions were a bit oddly vague--cover with water or milk and microwave for a minute. No measurements at all. I"ll keep using, experimenting with measures, and update.

still have to try the pancake/waffle mix

I'm sure I'll enjoy the granola and that the other items are of good quality. I was, however, looking for wheat free items. The following text "In addition each box contains one unit each of our O.S.M. Oatmeal and Pancake/Waffle Mix. These two items are made with oatmeal, sunflower seeds and millet." does not mention they also contain wheat flour and wheat germ.

Vermont Pure Maple Syrup by Brown Family Farm (8 ounce)

Vermont Pure Maple Syrup by Brown Family FarmI ordered one bottle of this to place on the breakfast table, and it was mostly gone that same day. It is perfect, not too sweet, complimenting without overwhelming the flavor of whatever you're pouring it on. Now I have to order more bottles, so I wish it was less expensive.

McCANN'S Steel Cut Irish Oatmeal, 28-Ounce Tins (Pack of 4)

McCANN'S Steel Cut Irish Oatmeal, 28-Ounce TinsI first heard about steel cut oats on the Oprah show about its health benefits. First of all I DO NOT like regular oatmeal like you buy in the grocery store. I don't like the slimy texture. But I figured I'd try steel cut oats and I'm glad I did. They are delicous and very good for you! The warm nutty aroma when they are cooking is very appetizing. I add a little bit of sugar or splenda and some cinnimon, it tastes fantastic! I also sometimes skip the cinnimon and add a tablespoon of granola and/or some dried berries. Excellent healthy breakfast.

Normally these take about 30 minutes to cook on the stovetop. I found a way to cut the cooking time in half. Take 1/3 cup of oats, and 1 1/3 cup of water and put it in a large microwavable bowl. Cook in the microwave on High for 5 minutes, stir, then another 5 minutes, then stir again, and then cook about another 2-3 minutes until the texture is just the way you like it.

For those of you who are asking what the difference is between regular oatmeal and steel cut oatmeal:

-Steel-Cut Oats are whole grain groats (the inner portion of the oat kernel) which have been cut into two or three pieces using steel discs. Golden in color and resembling mini rice particles, they are as nature intended nothing added and nothing taken out.

-Rolled oats are flake oats that have been steamed, rolled, re-steamed and toasted. Due to all of this additional processing they have lost some of their natural taste, goodness and texture.

If you dislike oatmeal made from rolled oats, try this product. You will like it. If you like oatmeal made from rolled oats, try this product. You will LOVE it. You must cook this oatmeal for half an hour, so put it on before your shower. You can eat it plain if you make it thin, or you can add cream, half-and-half, whole milk, or 2% milk to thin it a bit. I also like it with a dollop of plain yogurt. Sweeten it with brown sugar or raw sugar, or just add dried fruit (dates and figs are my favorites dried cherries are good also). Goes well also with a sprinkle of walnut pieces. But here is the best way to eat it -better than dessert:

Sweeten cooked oatmeal slightly with a modest amount of brown sugar, add just enough half-and-half to wet it thoroughly, and then add a healthy serving of fresh blueberries. Now THAT is some breakfast.

Steel cut oatmeal has a grainy, hearty texture that's more like al dente pasta than mush. American grown varieties often have a gelatinous texture between the grains. The Irish grown oatmeal is firm and nutty through and through.

My electric range cooks the oatmeal in about 25 minutes. I use a straight-edged spatula to keep the oatmeal from sticking to the bottom of the pan. Avoid over-stirring to keep that nice, firm texture.

More good news: Steel-cut oatmeal, like chili or stew, is better on the second day. Pour your leftovers into a bowl, lay plastic film directly on the surface of the oatmeal, and store in the 'fridge. Reheat in the microwave with a spoonful of water for a minute or two.

Genuine maple syrup is the best sweetener for oatmeal, in my opinion. Add diced apples or raisins or bananas, with a little milk, and you've got yourself a bowlful of breakfast!

I can tell this is a great oatmeal. It's thick, chewy, wholesome, filling but does not feel like a lead weight in your stomach. However, there is a slight stale smell when opening each can and if you eat them without brown sugar or honey you can taste that staleness. I would not buy them from amazon again as it seems they were kept around too long. You can get them for $5 a can at Trader Joe's I noticed today. I think the turnover there would be faster so will be doing that from now on. Great product though!

They're for eating, of course (ok, maybe if you're an oat farmer, you have a different persepctive.) At any rate, rather than argue the relative virtues of rolled vs. steel cut oat cereals, I sing the praises of both. Maybe it's a seasonal thing, the somewhat coarser, nuttier, rougher steel cuts somehow more fitting to cold winters than are the mellower and softer rolled oats. It's like black coffee to an au lait, dark beer to light, hard bebop to cool jazz...you get the picture.

You'll also feel virtuous spending some old-fashioned time over the stove (albeit not that much, or that arduous). The warming experience is itself sufficient, you'll feel like mending a fence somewhere (or tearing it down if in a RObert Frost frame of mind), but it's common to top this

with contrasting fruit, or perhaps nuts, syrups, flax seed oil, brown sugar, yoghurt, raisins, prunes, lat night's stew?--it's HEARTY enough to stand up to almost anything you can throw at it. Your doctor will probably extol the nutritional benefits: Fiber, protein, certain vitamins, etc. McCann's is the best of the bunch, and yes, that is a can that belongs in the Smithsonian--or its Irish equivalent. Hebridean soul food.

Post Raisin Bran Cereal, 25-Ounce Boxes (Pack of 5)

Post Raisin Bran Cereal, 25-Ounce BoxesRaisins are sweeter and juicier than those in Kellogg's raisin bran (seems like less sugar on them, too). (You also don't have to support a company that dumps an olympic swimmer for minding his own business and enjoying some recreational chemicals.) Otherwise, it's raisin bran, the cereal you've always loved. At five big boxes for $20 on Subscribe and Save, how can you go wrong?

It's interesting that Post put "No high fructose corn syrup" on the package. If you read the ingredients, you will see that it contains corn syrup, just as bad for someone allergic to corn.

Single Serve Instant Oatmeal, 1.9 Oz. Bowl, 12/Box

Single Serve Instant Oatmeal, 1.9 Oz. Bowl, 12/BoxThis is IMHO the best instant oatmeal ever. The problem is only one grocery in my area carries this brand and they are erratic in stocking the flavors I like (Apples 'n Cinnamon and Baked Apple). Consequently, I have to order it on line. The only draw back to online ordering is price; it cost me more than 100% more to order on line than to purchase in the store ($0.99 in store vs $2.15 per serving on line). And to make matters worse, Amazon doesn't stock it all the time. Right now I have to sign up to be notified when it will be available again. So, I end up having to go to other suppliers on line to find this product.

However, this is still the best instant oatmeal in the world and I will pursue it to the ends of the earth!!!!

Earth's Best Organic Whole Grain, Rice Cereal with Apples, 8 Ounce Box

Earth's Best Organic Whole Grain, Rice Cereal with Apples, 8 Ounce Boxi am currently feeding my baby Earth's Best veggies starter and since it is a bit on the thin side i use this rice cereal to help thicken the mixture. i microwave the veggies in a bowl for 20 sec then i mix in the rice cereal until i have the desired consistency for feeding. if i accidentally added too much, i just add warm milk. the cereal dissolves/mixes easily with a spoon. it works well and baby loves it! this pack of 6 with "prime" is also a great deal.

I dilute the cereal just with plain water and it still tastes pretty good. My baby loves it.I highly recommend it: good product, good price.

Just add water and you are good. I have also added Mango Pulp which my daughter seemed to enjoy much more. I would suggest adding Mango Pulp or something similar instead of just water.
