ExtendBar, Chocolate Delight, 1.41-Ounce Bars (Pack of 15)

ExtendBar, Chocolate Delight, 1.41-Ounce BarsGoing on Weight Watchers has its challenges. I have lost about 40 lbs to date and it has been good but I find that many of the products recommended by them have too much sugar. For example, everyone suggested Fiber One Bars as a snack because they are low in points. I noticed though that they spiked my blood sugar and stalled my weight loss. I switched to Extend Bars and boy, what a difference! I eat one of these every day, some times two. I really like them before bed or in the morning to help stabilize my blood sugar (I am hypoglycemic, pre-diabetic). I never have trouble eating breakfast now, these with a glass of skim milk or coffee and milk and a piece of fruit and I am good to go until lunch.

What is the difference between Extend Bars and the rest on the market? First, they are only a 150 calories with only 3 grams of fat but 11 grams of protein per bar. They also have 5 grams of fiber, just enough to help digestion, without causing stomach discomfort. (Something I can not say about some of the others on the market!)

I can not find another bar on the market to match those protein and fiber stats for the little calories and fat exchange. Also, the glycemic index is low because this bar contains a special slow digesting corn starch created from a corn grain that is different than the normal variety. It does not allow the blood sugar to spike, which can stall weight loss. This is the number one selling point for me, high protein and low glycemic...

Finally because I really believe we eat WAY too many processed carbs in our diet, this satisfied me in another area, it has a low net carb ratio, and does it WITHOUT the use of high levels of sugar alcohol. There are only 4 grams of sugar alcohol per bar, that is completely different than any other low carb bar on the market.

I really like the Chocolate and Peanut Butter, but not too wild about the berry and apple ones though. These taste exactly like the South Beach Cereal Bars, just less sweet. Give them a chance, they are not going to be as sweet as other things on the market...but they are great with coffee or milk...helps them not be too dry. Be sure to drink plenty of water as will any high fiber bar.

These were recommended in the class I took when 1st Dxed with diabetes. They work well whenever you don't want to eat more (dieting), or when you won't eat for hours; that includes overnight to help avoid high sugar levels when you wake. In fact, they're very good at helping me get a full night's sleep, uninterrupted by waking up to eat a snack.

My 9-year-old daughter has Type 1 diabetes and we could not find a bedtime snack that stabilized her overnight blood sugar until her diabetes educator recommended the Extend Bar. It REALLY does what it claims to do stops blood sugar from going too low overnight. Now my daughter does not have to eat a glucose tablet in the middle of the night to keep from going too low. Her morning headaches and shakiness are gone! If her bedtime blood sugar is 120, her fasting blood sugar is usually around 100. The bars do not cause a sharp spike in blood sugar, just as advertized. Although they don't taste like real granola bars (not as sweet or moist), all the peanut and chocolate varieties are tasty enough to satisfy a picky 9-year-old. Thank you, Extend Bar!

UPDATE 12/2/2010:

We tried all varieties of Extend Bar except the Mixed Berry. The "Delight" varieties work the best at stabilizing the blood sugar of a Type 1 diabetic, since they contain only 20-21 carbs, no sugar, and 4-6 grams of sugar alcohol:

Chocolate Delight

Chocolate Peanut Delight

Peanut Delight

The "Crunch" varieties contain 30 carbs, 10 grams sugar (!), and 5 grams of sugar alcohol and they caused my diabetic daughter's blood sugar to spike overnight. I don't understand why the manufacturer included so much sugar! These are not a good choice for a Type 1 diabetic, although they might work for a mild Type II diabetic who still manufactures insulin:

Chocolate Crunch

Peanut Butter Crunch

No one liked the taste of the Apple Cinnamon variety.

I'm a group exercise instructor who suffers from frequent and severe low blood sugar. I've been through all sorts of different bars and these are hands down THE BEST. They taste great, have 6g of dietary fiber and 11g of protein, low in fat....chocolate tastes exactly like a Crunch bar.

I noticed a difference in my blood sugar stability the first morning I had one. I usually can't go without eating something for more than an hour and a half, but these carried me about 3 hours before I realized I needed to eat again. That says a LOT! I'm not even going to try the 9 hour claim it makes, but that's just me.

LOVE THEM and I'll cry if they ever discontinue them!!

Familia Low-Fat Muesli Cereal, 21-Ounce Boxes (Pack of 6)

Familia Low-Fat Muesli Cereal, 21-Ounce BoxesI have tried all the FAMILIA cerealsI think there are 6muesli and granolas by trial and error this one Familia Low-Fatis for me perfect because I don't like the granolas that are sweetened with honey The Original Style Familias are really mostly just oatmeal and a few raisons not a great value. This one has lots of fruits and nuts without being too sweet.

A quality product from Bio-familia, a Swedish company that developed "Birchermüesli" a product so popular and successful that made the name Muesli famous all over the world.

If you need a high fiber and protein snack option for your diet, this is absolutely a very good product. You can't go wrong and the best of all: excellent taste and quality, and for a pack of six this comes at a good value. The fact that this cereal is low-fat makes a good product even better if you are trying to lose some weight or wanting to keep in shape.

Sometimes your diet will require you eat frequently and consciously, and in those cases you need to have a snack at hand when you get hungry, in order to keep your metabolism high all day long. In such cases finding a good and balance option could be hard. I love this 6-pack and I always have one at home an another pack at the office. I try to eat five or more times a day, so in my case having a healthy snack at hand wherever I am when I get hungry is a priority.

Since you are checking this product I have to guess that you are probably a person that cares about what you eat, either because you are interested in losing weight, getting in better shape or just be healthier and keep in good shape, so I will share my own experience in the weight loss game and staying in shape game

My own successful personal experience in weight loss is based on strategies to boost metabolism. Don't stress yourself, eat frequently, eat just what you need each time, and choose wisely what you are going to eat, supplement your diet. Yet simple and it works. I loss more than 200 lbs and shrink my waist (from 44 to 32), and I have been able to keep in good shape since then. Every single aspect of my life has improved since then.

Keep in mind that a good diet is just part of the equation, you also need a plan that helps you keep on track and monitor your condition. Based on my own personal experience I can recommend some tools that you may want to consider, to establish your own strategies for boosting your metabolism, loosing weight, and even more important keeping that weight off. They are:

"Ultrametabolism: The Simple Plan for Automatic Weight Loss" by Mark Hyman. A practical an realistic plan for weigh loss.

"The ABS Diet", which is another very practical, readable, insightful, and inspirational book, that also includes an exercise plan.

A Body Fat Monitor or Scale. This will help you monitor your progress, to assure that the weight you are loosing is fat (fat lost = increased metabolism) and not muscle, water or bone mass (decreased metabolism).

A Heart Rate Monitor Wrist Watch. This is an excellent tool that will help you monitor and control your Heart Rate in order to keep yourself in a burning fat state (increased metabolism).

"Heart Monitor Training for the Complete Idiot", a primer on the use of Heart Rate Monitors for health improvement or weight control.

If you want to star focusing only on your diet, the first two may be worth considering. If you exercise, or want to start doing it right, the last threee are for you. If you do both, all the recommended options can improve your results.

I am 39 years old, With the help of the tools I just mentioned not only I went fro size 44 to size 32 pants, but also obtained substantial benefits that included weight control, cardiovascular improvements, lowered blood pressure, and improved muscular-skeletal strength and flexibility, but also the myriad of mental and psychological benefits derived from being in the best shape of my life.

Like another reviewer, I've sampled a number of the other Familia mueslis, and other granolas and mueslis at stores.

This is the superior muesli. (I'm eating some now to make sure I get this right...) I wouldn't think of myself as a muesli commentator, but this stuff is surprisingly good so I had to chime in.

It has a good selection of dried fruit and nuts, plus a bit of dried rice and corn flakes for texture. I wasn't particularly looking for low-fat but that's a bonus.

Very tasty to eat! I eat it with breakfast, and often as dessert after dinner.

Enjoy...

I've found purchasing this cereal via Amazon to be the most convenient and economical way to obtain the product on a regular basis. And, if I'm not consuming as much and don't need a delivery, I can skip one. The cartons arrive six per pack and are delivered to my door. What could be better? Plus, it's a product that's sometimes hard to find, and at most grocery stores, its price is at a premium.

This cereal tastes great, isn't high in calories, is low sugar, and has plenty of fiber. It has dried bananas and dates which add to the taste. I usually have one cup cereal, one cup light or nonfat milk, and sliced fruit. It makes a terrific breakfast or lunch. I've ordered the six-pack many times and still enjoy the flavor of this cereal. Highly recommended.

Post Selects Blueberry Morning Cereal, 13.5-Ounce Boxes (Pack of 7)

Post Selects Blueberry Morning Cereal, 13.5-Ounce BoxesI have been buying them for years at Ralph's for $4.49 a box. I would expect a lower price online buying a box of 7!

This cereal really tastes great! Why the one star review? Seems that along with a new look to their box art (white box now), Post has decided to advertise that it has given its customers bigger berries. That's great you say. But when you pour out the contents into a separate container you'll be shocked to learn that you have approximately 25% less cereal by volume. Guess those bigger berries were needed to bring the weight back up to the same heft as last year's product. Good thing they didn't raise the price, huh? Guess I'll be looking for another product. Too bad Post. You really didn't think we'd notice?

For some unknown reason the local stores quit carrying this cereal and the only way I was able to get it was by ordering it.

Hodgson Mill Oat Bran Hot Cereal -- 16 oz

Hodgson Mill Oat Bran Hot Cereal -- 16 ozI don't like hot cereal with sugar and milk. An addict of oat bran, I make mine with chicken broth (+half water) and a couple of added herbs and onion flavoring. Every morning it's like being allowed to eat all the delicious stuffing out of the turkey with no guilt!

Hodgson's Mill Oat Bran seems to be the best of the lot -it tastes freshly milled and it cooks quickly. But it's hard to find in certain areas and the company's customer service is not helpful when it comes to finding retailers. Thank goodness for Amazon.

As a regular user for several months now, it's nice to report a weight loss, even during the holiday season and cold winter. Could that be because a bowl of oat bran (with no added fat) is so filling that snacks and even lunch become unnecessary?

I can't believe I paid here over $11..big mistake

on my part should checked local first...

just paid under $ 3.00 for 16 oz at our local Publix

rated a 5 * for the item...

I used to eat Quaker Oat Bran but one day discovered Hodgson's. I eat it every morning and it is the best, brown and crunchy compared to the bland whiteness of Quaker or Mother's. I add water and a few peach slices, some ginger and a pinch of pepper, then two minutes in the microwave and it's a great way to start the day. When my local supermarket stopped carrying it, for some reason, I found this offer and immediately bought 10 boxes. And when they're gone, I'll buy 10 more!

At the Hodgson Mill website they are seling a case of 6 for the same price. talk about rip-offs.

This is the BEST OAT Bran cereal. But one star because it is over-priced! Should be less than $3.00 a box, if purchased from your local grocery store, such as Harris Teeter or Publix. Or order directly from Hodgson Mill website for a case with 6 boxes for a total of $11.50, though shipping costs are high. Or order from iherb website at $2.07 a box, lower shipping charges. Still this is the best Oat Bran cereal in the market.

SoLo Gi Chocolate Charger Bars, 1.76-Ounce Bars (Pack of 12)

SoLo Gi Chocolate Charger Bars, 1.76-Ounce BarsI love these bars, I'm so glad that Amazon has started carrying them, as it's difficult to find them in sufficient quantities! I literally eat one or two a day, and though a number of grocery and healthfood stores carry them, they often don't have the full cases I need.

The low GI takes a little getting used to at first you won't get an instant sugar rush like you will from other energy bars, but an hour or two later, you'll still be sated and won't be craving more carbs.

Great science, great taste (I prefer the chocolate and chocolate mint, but my wife prefers the berry and lemon), and these make it easy to get the healthy small meals I need to maintain even blood sugar levels (no, I'm not diabetic, but I've lost significant weight and kept it off by switching to a low-GI diet and more frequent, smaller meals).

I have searched high and low (no pun intended) for a convenient snack bar that tastes great and does not spike blood sugar. I cannot tolerate Aspartame, Splenda or any of the other artificial sweeteners out there and trying to find products that have stevia or agave nectar are not that easy (and those I've found have honestly not been that great).

These chocolate bars have a wonderful, chewy texture and they taste (to me)like a regular candy bar. Obviously, you can't go crazy and eat the whole box at once (although you will be tempted), but these wonderful bars will give those who try to eat low on the glycemic index the opportunity to enjoy a real treat.

Although the other members of my family are not bound by the same dietary restrictions, they LOVED these bars. I can tell they are going to be the treats of choice in my house. I can't wait to try the other flavors.

The glycemic index does not take away the WANTING to eat but you feel Full and it is easier to do what is good for you. Being a diabetic my problems are harder to deal with and these truly helped.
