Bunnery Natural Foods Breakfast Variety Sampler, 5.25-Pound

Bunnery Natural Foods Breakfast Variety Sampler, 5.25-PoundAll the family is a fan of granola. We have tried many different brands over the past two years, and the children choose those from The Bunnery in Jackson Hole as the best, far better than Bear Naked and Kashi, etc.

They are the perfect balance of sweet and sour, with the delicate taste of the different grains. They also stay fresh and crunchy for a good 6 months.

I also like the pancake and waffle mix with oats, sunlowers seeds and millet. You add some honey and you feel that you're starting your day at your phycal best.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program This was a great assortment of four kinds of granola, a natural oatmeal blend and a whole grain pancake and waffle mix. The granola was addictive even after I'd finished it, I'd find myself wanting a bowl. It was naturally sweet, crunchy, nutty and wonderful. My favorite of the four flavors was the blueberry the cinnamon was not too overpowering, and it had a fair amount of blueberries in it. I'll be buying more of it.

The oatmeal is heavy duty these aren't flakes, but ground oats mixed with sunflower seeds and some whole grains. It swells up, so take half of what you think you can eat and allow for twice the milk you think you need to add. It's a great, stick to your ribs way to start the day.

The pancake and waffle mix was also full of cracked grains and sunflower seeds (not an overwhelming amount.) I was afraid the cakes would be heavy, but with a little extra milk they created a fluffy cake with a nice little crunch to it. I highly recommend giving this a try, because this mix turns the guilty pleasure of pancakes into a healthful, satisfying choice for breakfast.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program As one might expect in a variety pack, there will be, well, a variety of responses. I haven't finished and will update as I get to them all, but here's what's what so far:

Original Granola: My wife found it too sweet and powdery. I didn't think it overly sweet, but agreed on the powdery part. We both prefer our granola to be chunkier, bite-size pieces with some heft/crunch to them. Not sure if this is an isolated or a shipping issue, but this bag was mostly pulverized granola. Taste was good, but nothing out of the ordinary. A few serving facts:

120 calories 25 mg of sodium (seemed a bit high) 5 gr. of sugar 3 g of protein

Ingredients: Oats, honey, sunflower seeds, coconut( couldn't really taste), canola oil, sesame seeds, walnuts, water, almonds, salt, cinnamon (couldn't really taste), cloves

Banana honey-nut: We both found this one a bit sweet. Much better consistency with lots of bite-sized chunks. Liked the taste better than the regular.

120 cal 6 g fat 25 mg sodium 5 g sugar 3 g of protein

Ingredients: Oats, honey, brown rice syrup, sunflower seeds, coconut( couldn't really taste), canola oil, sesame seeds, walnuts, dehydrated bananas, water, almonds, salt, cinnamon (couldn't really taste), cloves

Cranberry nut: My personal favorite. Not too sweet, very nice taste with hints of vanilla rather than overpowering. Also good bite-sized chunks. Same nutrition. Same ingredients as above save rather than bananas it has cranberries (go figure) and vanilla extract.

Blueberry: No too sweet, has a blueberry taste but while it isn't bad, I didn't care much for it. Good bite-sized chunks. Same nutrition, save for, well, you can figure it out

oatmeal: taste is OK, I kind of liked it, but it wouldn't be my first reach on the shelf for oatmeal. I did like the sunflower taste and consistency. Directions were a bit oddly vague--cover with water or milk and microwave for a minute. No measurements at all. I"ll keep using, experimenting with measures, and update.

still have to try the pancake/waffle mix

I'm sure I'll enjoy the granola and that the other items are of good quality. I was, however, looking for wheat free items. The following text "In addition each box contains one unit each of our O.S.M. Oatmeal and Pancake/Waffle Mix. These two items are made with oatmeal, sunflower seeds and millet." does not mention they also contain wheat flour and wheat germ.

Post Grape-Nuts Cereal 24 oz

Post Grape-Nuts Cereal 24 ozI have been eating Grape Nuts on and off for many years and re-discovered them a few months ago. I'm not going to say it's for everyone, but I love its crunch and heartiness. Even though I eat much less of it than other cereals at a sitting, it keeps me full longer. I often eat it with fruit on top, but not always. It's not usually a cereal I eat every day, but I'll eat it a few times per week.

After reading a 1-star review claiming that Grape Nuts is made with white flour, I did some research. What I found out is that the "recipe" for Grape Nuts has changed since it was originally produced. But IS it made with white flour? Well, here's the ingredient list and an explanation of them:

Whole Grain Wheat Flour, Malted Barley Flour, Isolated Soy Protein, Salt, Whole Grain Barley Flour, Malt Extract, Dried Yeast

Regarding whole grain vs. whole wheat, Fitday.com says this: "Whole grain has the entire kernel of the grain from the bran to the endosperm to the germ. Whole wheat has the bran and germ removed during the refining process and is left containing only the endosperm. Unfortunately, the majority of vitamins and fiber are contained in the wheat bran and wheat germ that is shed during the refining process."

According to the Bob's Red Mill website (they sell flour and grain products), malted barley flour is used to "give bread a slightly sweet flavor and moist texture." It also prolongs the shelf life of products.

Isolated Soy Protein (aka Soy Protein Isolate) is a common protein additive in vegetarian foods to provide protein to those who are not meat eaters. It is not without controversy as an ingredient, but then soy as a whole has been controversial of late due to its estrogenic properties.

Malt extract also contains protein (and some sugars).

Whole grain barley flour is a non-wheat flour made from ground barley.

Yeast and salt are pretty self explanatory.

Here is the nutritional information per 1/2 cup serving:

Calories 210

Total Fat 1g

Saturated Fat 0g

Trans Fat 0g

Polyunsat Fat 0.5g

Monounsat Fat 0g

Cholesterol 0mg

Sodium 290mg

Potassium 220mg

Total Carbs 44g

Dietary Fiber 7g

Sugars 5g

Other Carbs 32g

Protein 8g

You're not going to find a lot of cereals which provide that much protein and fiber with that little sugar. In addition, you get a nice boost of potassium.

I'm not saying the stuff is perfect nutrition, but it is a lot better nutritionally than most of the crap in the cereal aisle these days!

I love this cereal. I use soy milk and some fruit. For me, I like to let it soak up the milk until the cereal is softer to eat. But I have eaten when it is crunchy too. I would recommend that you hold on to the bottom of the box because the cereal settles on the lower part of the box and tends to fall out of your hand [ they must be using lighter paper in the box].

I used to love this stufftill I found out it was made with white flour. White flour has most of the nutrition removed, it is like dead. Might as well eat donuts.

ExtendBar, Chocolate Delight, 1.41-Ounce Bars (Pack of 15)

ExtendBar, Chocolate Delight, 1.41-Ounce BarsGoing on Weight Watchers has its challenges. I have lost about 40 lbs to date and it has been good but I find that many of the products recommended by them have too much sugar. For example, everyone suggested Fiber One Bars as a snack because they are low in points. I noticed though that they spiked my blood sugar and stalled my weight loss. I switched to Extend Bars and boy, what a difference! I eat one of these every day, some times two. I really like them before bed or in the morning to help stabilize my blood sugar (I am hypoglycemic, pre-diabetic). I never have trouble eating breakfast now, these with a glass of skim milk or coffee and milk and a piece of fruit and I am good to go until lunch.

What is the difference between Extend Bars and the rest on the market? First, they are only a 150 calories with only 3 grams of fat but 11 grams of protein per bar. They also have 5 grams of fiber, just enough to help digestion, without causing stomach discomfort. (Something I can not say about some of the others on the market!)

I can not find another bar on the market to match those protein and fiber stats for the little calories and fat exchange. Also, the glycemic index is low because this bar contains a special slow digesting corn starch created from a corn grain that is different than the normal variety. It does not allow the blood sugar to spike, which can stall weight loss. This is the number one selling point for me, high protein and low glycemic...

Finally because I really believe we eat WAY too many processed carbs in our diet, this satisfied me in another area, it has a low net carb ratio, and does it WITHOUT the use of high levels of sugar alcohol. There are only 4 grams of sugar alcohol per bar, that is completely different than any other low carb bar on the market.

I really like the Chocolate and Peanut Butter, but not too wild about the berry and apple ones though. These taste exactly like the South Beach Cereal Bars, just less sweet. Give them a chance, they are not going to be as sweet as other things on the market...but they are great with coffee or milk...helps them not be too dry. Be sure to drink plenty of water as will any high fiber bar.

These were recommended in the class I took when 1st Dxed with diabetes. They work well whenever you don't want to eat more (dieting), or when you won't eat for hours; that includes overnight to help avoid high sugar levels when you wake. In fact, they're very good at helping me get a full night's sleep, uninterrupted by waking up to eat a snack.

My 9-year-old daughter has Type 1 diabetes and we could not find a bedtime snack that stabilized her overnight blood sugar until her diabetes educator recommended the Extend Bar. It REALLY does what it claims to do stops blood sugar from going too low overnight. Now my daughter does not have to eat a glucose tablet in the middle of the night to keep from going too low. Her morning headaches and shakiness are gone! If her bedtime blood sugar is 120, her fasting blood sugar is usually around 100. The bars do not cause a sharp spike in blood sugar, just as advertized. Although they don't taste like real granola bars (not as sweet or moist), all the peanut and chocolate varieties are tasty enough to satisfy a picky 9-year-old. Thank you, Extend Bar!

UPDATE 12/2/2010:

We tried all varieties of Extend Bar except the Mixed Berry. The "Delight" varieties work the best at stabilizing the blood sugar of a Type 1 diabetic, since they contain only 20-21 carbs, no sugar, and 4-6 grams of sugar alcohol:

Chocolate Delight

Chocolate Peanut Delight

Peanut Delight

The "Crunch" varieties contain 30 carbs, 10 grams sugar (!), and 5 grams of sugar alcohol and they caused my diabetic daughter's blood sugar to spike overnight. I don't understand why the manufacturer included so much sugar! These are not a good choice for a Type 1 diabetic, although they might work for a mild Type II diabetic who still manufactures insulin:

Chocolate Crunch

Peanut Butter Crunch

No one liked the taste of the Apple Cinnamon variety.

I'm a group exercise instructor who suffers from frequent and severe low blood sugar. I've been through all sorts of different bars and these are hands down THE BEST. They taste great, have 6g of dietary fiber and 11g of protein, low in fat....chocolate tastes exactly like a Crunch bar.

I noticed a difference in my blood sugar stability the first morning I had one. I usually can't go without eating something for more than an hour and a half, but these carried me about 3 hours before I realized I needed to eat again. That says a LOT! I'm not even going to try the 9 hour claim it makes, but that's just me.

LOVE THEM and I'll cry if they ever discontinue them!!

Black Raspberry Jam

Black Raspberry JamI ordered this because Black Raspberry jellies and jams are hard to find locally.

Growing up in Indiana my grandmother and mother made homemade black raspberry pies and jams and I was looking for a product that would bring back those memories.

This is a very good jam but it doesn't compare to my grandma's, mainly because she used a lot of sugar. But being a diabetic I don't need the sugar and this product just suits me perfectly. It is all natural and if it has any sugar at all in it it must be very little. Black raspberries are naturally sweeter than blackberries so they don't need a lot of sugar.

I also ordered the frozen Black Raspberries to make pies and they are also excellent. Large nice berries.

Oat Revolution! Instant Oatmeal - Strawberries & Cream - 5 Pouches Per 6.15-oz. Box (Pack of 3 Boxe

Oat Revolution! Instant Oatmeal - Strawberries & Cream - 5 Pouches Per 6.15-oz. BoxI purchased one box of each flavor and have discovered that every one of them taste like chemicals except the peaches and cream. It is not just me as I have had about a dozen other people try it and they all make a strange face and say "it tastes like chemicals!" I had hoped to find a new brand of oatmeal, but since they apparently over due the artificial flavors making the strawberry taste more like generic strawberry jelly and the mixed berry tasting like a candy that is supposed to taste like berries and is CLOSE but not really... I will be looking for another brand all together.

2 Stars because of the convenient packaging which takes up less room in my kitchen, in my bag for school, and in my camping gear. Still have many pouches to go though... not sure if I will make it!

I love this oatmeal, like the others I thought that at the price it would be not so good, but it is the best oatmeal I have ever had. I get it for $1 a box at Acme, but go through it so quickly I thought I would buy it in bulk. I am sorry to see that a three pack that I would pay 3 dollars for is so high. Guess I'll keep making trips to Acme for now, but let me know if the price comes down!

I guess I should start by saying that I don't really like oatmeal to begin with. But I bought the maple and brown sugar flavor and I actually liked it. So I decided to try the other flavors, and this morning was strawberries and cream. It was gross. Extremely sweet and has a very artificial strawberry taste. Maybe some people would like it thoughmy kids seem to think it is fine. Also, the price here is ridiculous. I paid $1 for a box of 5 pouches at my local grocery store.

Difference is the ingredients. This is all stuff you would want in your body. I like the taste, but it does taste different than the Q brand and similar store generics. It doesn't have the dehydrated cream component. I just wish it were a little more affordable and available via Subscribe & Save.

Can't buy this in the DC area.

Had it shipped in and now, suddenly, the kids like peanut butter.

They won't touch other brands and that is blind taste testing.

I had to talk them into trying this and now they will eat peanut butter on anything.
