Oatmeal gets a bad rap these days. Most people have their first experience with the quaker instant oatmeal, loaded with sugar and artificial flavoring, with the consistency of mush. After eating it, you just feel dirty for the next few hours, like you ate candy for breakfast. The rest of their lives, people never go back. John McCanns's oatmeal will convert anyone back.
The flavor and consistency is everything you could ask for in a warm breakfast cereal. Once you try it, you can never go back to regular oatmeal. It's chewy and delicious, not like the quaker slime you might remember. Sure, it takes 30 minutes to cook, but after you've done it once, it's easy. I wake up, throw some water on the stove, make my coffee, drink my coffee while I wait for it to boil, throw in the oats, set the dial to 3, give it a stir, and take a shower. When I come out, breakfast is almost ready. I could understand if you don't have the extra time, but this stuff is worth it.
The only thing is that this oatmeal is about 5-6 times more expensive than Steel-Cut oatmeal you can buy in bulk at the grocery store. That isn't to say that you can't taste the difference in quality, but at some point, they're both steel-cut oatmeal.
So if you want the very best, go with John McCann's. I highly recommend buying a tin if it's your first time trying steel-cut, since it takes a few times to figure out how to cook it and the tin provides instruction. It also looks very cool and gives you a place to put the oats you might buy in bulk later.

This is BY FAR my favorite oatmeal. The price here, however is almost 4x as much as it costs at my local grocery store (it's $6.99 at the Food Emporium right outside Times Square in NYC). I hope this is an error.Want McCann Steel Cut Irish Oatmeal 28oz Discount?
This oatmeal is in my point of view the best; it taste great and I like to make it in the slow cooker so it is ready when I get up.Very good. Time consuming to cook--don't plan to cook it for breakfast without a spare 45 minutes!Gooey liquide that forms while cooking is a little weird.
