One 25 oz Bob's Red Mill 10 Grain Hot Cereal

One 25 oz Bob's Red Mill 10 Grain Hot CerealThis is great tasting, full bodied organic cereal. The thing is though it tastes very plain. I suggest mixing cinnamon spices with it, brown sugar (as mentioned), nuts, apples, and a little bit of milk..

Had this cereal while visiting family at Christmas and had to have it. Hard to find in Phoenix so I ordered it from Amazon. Truly the best. Add nuts, raisins and brown sugar and you have a wholesome fulfilling meal. The best!

I use this cereal sa an addition to my bread doughs. I tis less expensive than buying the 'correct' flour and yields a much better product. And Bob's Red Mill has the lowest prices for the best quality products; some items are nearly half their competitors' prices.

A good choice for adding whole grains and more cereal variety to diet. Price is reasonable and I like it well enough to order in a larger quantity. It takes a while to cook so you may want to cook extra one day and microwave the remainder for next day's breakfast if you are in a morning rush. You may need to check the 10 grain list if your family has problems with allergies.

McCann's Artisan Collection Instant Oatmeal, Pumpkin Pecan with Vietnamese Cinnamon, 8-Count Packets

McCann's Artisan Collection Instant Oatmeal, Pumpkin Pecan with Vietnamese Cinnamon, 8-Count PacketsGood but no real pumpkin or pumpkin spice flavor. Had to jazz it up with my own spices. Better texture and overall flavor than your run-of-the-mill cheapy oatmeal.

I already like McCann's plain, regular oatmeal so tried this for kids going to school. Box is about same weight as Quaker (12.1 oz vs Quaker's 12.3 oz) but McCann's has 8 packets vs 10 which I like as there is more in a packet. Who only makes 1 packet anyway which is enough for about a toddler..and even with the bigger packet we still use 2 each as adults.

Ingredients in McCCann's vs Quaker: McCann's has higher fat/sodium/carbs which is expected..packet is bigger. Same amount of protein though (bigger packet so should have been more...) and no vitamins listed like Quaker which fortifies theirs. Quaker lists "whole grain oats" while McCann's lists "Irish Oats"..so...are "Irish Oats" whole grain and..what makes them special? Quaker has a lot of extra "stuff" like soy lecithin, vanilla extract, natural flavor, calcium carbonate, guar gum, oat flour, caramel color, reduced iron, vitamin a palmitate and may contain soy and milk. McCann's is simple: Irish oats, evaporated cane syrup, pecans, sea salt, cinnamon, natural pumpkin flavor. (Was hoping to find some kind of dried pumpkin pieces...oh well)

McCann's wins with us in natural and delicious taste, plenty of nuts, bigger packet and simple ingredients although a point off for DOUBLE the cost of Quaker (ouch). Find specials and coupons and it is WORTH it. Still wondering why "Irish oats" are any different and if they are even whole grain....but looking forward to trying all the other flavors. :)

There is no pumpkin taste at all.I do not recommend this flavor unless you like cinnamon. You can only taste the cinnamon.

McCann's is my preferred brand of oatmeal.

I use their steel cut and quick cook oats all the time and think their instant (plain) is the best I've ever tasted, so I was very excited when I saw this product on Amazon! I didn't even mind the price, figuring it was a sure thing it because it was McCann's and pumpkin I love pumpkin!

Unfortunately, I was VERY disappointed.

I could discern no pumpkin and it was so sweet, i had to cut it down with packet of plain oatmeal.

The packets are still in the cupboard. I offer it as a breakfast choice when we have guests. One person said they liked it and the other agreed with my assessment.

We bought some oatmeal that was suppose to be instant from Costco and it was from the same company but we had to cook and cook and cook the stuff before it would be edible. Needless to say we returned it to Costco. I really didn't want to spend 20 minutes in the morning cooking oatmeal although the oatmeal itself was really good. I saw this on amazon and thought I'd give it a go. This stuff IS actually instant and took a whole 70 seconds to make in our microwave and it turned out great.

Bob's Red Mill Buckwheat Pancake Mix, 26-Ounce Bags (Pack of 4)

Bob's Red Mill Buckwheat Pancake Mix, 26-Ounce BagsI simply love Bob's Red mill products, and love Amazon for selling them for quite a bit less than Whole Paycheck. I've been enjoying a lot of things from them recently, including Kamut Breakfast Cereal and a really delicious soup mix. Their Buckwheat Pancake mix is another example of a healthy, tasty, and reasonably priced item from Bob's Red Mill. I got a taste for Buckwheat pancakes as a kid (My mom used to make them on cold mornings in January), but stopped eating them as an adult. My wife LOVES pancakes, and while I enjoy them too, I find the regular kind not keep me filled up, nor are they particularly healthy. I remembered that I used to really like buckwheat pancakes, and decided to hunt some up. I found these, and have been enjoying them ever since.

The mix is easy to prepare, but this isn't a 'complete' mix and does require an egg and some oil in addition to cold water. As an alternative you can use milk, which gives the pancakes a slightly richer flavor. Milk or water, either way they're tasty! Buckwheat is a wholegrain, meaning these fill you up and keep you filled much longer than traditional pancakes which are full of sugar and cheap carbs. I can eat probably a dozen regular pancakes. I can only manage to put away 5-6 of these guys!

A few recommendations on preparation:

1) Mix the pancake batter and then let it sit 30 minutes or even an hour in your refrigerator. It makes the pancakes lighter and fluffier.

2) Go for thinner batter rather than thick. It makes the pancakes easier to cook, and gives you a tastier pancake as a result.

3) Cook on medium heat, not high. Because the batter is dark to begin with, it is harder to tell when your pancakes are done without overcooking them. Use less heat to help you get them cooked perfectly.

4) You can easily mix this batter with a regular pancake mix to make 'hybrid' cakes if you find these are a bit too thick for your taste. I've gone that route a few times for my wife since she likes her pancakes less dense than these.

5) Get yourself some real maple syrup! Nothing goes as well with Buckwheat pancakes than real maple syrup! That's how the American pioneers ate them, and I love feeling like I'm participating in an American tradition when I make these for my family.

6) Eat them for dinner! Pancakes and eggs for dinner is amazing.

You can't go wrong with these pancakes. Buy them. Cook them. Eat them. Repeat!

I remember Buckwheat Pancakes from years ago. The thought of these heavy, rich tasting pancakes brings a sigh to my lips. My Mom useed to cook these when I was a kid, and I always loved them...now, I fixed them for my Grandson, and he feels the same...3 pancakes, 2 eggs, and lots of butter and real Homemade Hot Sugar and vanalla suyrp...OMG...soooo good. layer a pancake, then egg, then pancake, then another egg, finished by another pancake to make the Family Stacker! I found this brand a few years back, and it is the real thing...easy to make, healthy, and Lord knows...eat 3 of these and you will NOT be hungry in a couple hours! They Stick with you. Is a common breakfast item from long ago...settlers and farmers...eat these and you could plow a field, and have more energy to make it till lunch! Be Well, and Blessings upon all...

These buckwheat pancakes come out great and you don't need to feel guilty about eating something with an ingredients list that is frighteningly long. Like someone else mentioned, these pancakes are best served with maple syrup, not aunt jemima high fructose corn syrup. Unfortunately, I haven't tried the mix in waffle form. Throw in Bananas or chocolate chips or walnuts etc for a twist!

Here's the recipe on the back of the package (I've bought three packages in the past couple months and just recently put one and a half into a container for better storage (threw out the package)and looked all over the internet for it!):

Pancake Mix:

1 cup mix

1 egg

1 tsp oil

3/4 cup cold milk

Waffle Mix:

1 cup mix

2 eggs

2 tsp oil

3/4 cup cold milk

My grandkids don't even know they are eating whole grain pancakes, the texture is like regular pancakes. I also like the fact that Bob's Red Mill mixes are all organic but the price is very reasonable. These pancakes are easy to make and my husband asks for them often, many times for dinner. I gave my daughter a package of this pancake mix and now her family is hooked on these pancakes. I highly recommend this mix, once you try it you will be glad you did.

BOB'S VS. BISQUICK:

I went to Bob's Buckwheat Pancake Mix (have now gone through two 4-packs!) from using Bisquick, mainly to get away from the refined flour and get some better, whole grain nutrition. I'm happy I did, and wouldn't go back; it's my body I'm feeding. The negative is, and some others have noted it here, is that this mix doesn't produce particularly light, fluffy pancakes. They're good, but not super light like Bisquick did. Maybe if you beat and fold in egg whites (but I don't eat eggs). That's not to say they don't rise, or they aren't good, and great tasting.

BOB'S VS MADE FROM SCRATCH

No comparison. I bought organic bulk buckwheat flour (which you can get pretty inexpensive in a 25lb bag if you're a nut) from Amazon; search for "Great River Organic Milling." I then made my own egg-less, butter-less, milk-less version from something I found on the web:

3/4c Buckwheat flour

3/4c Whole wheat flour

1.5 tsp Baking Powder

1/2 tsp Baking Soda (I think you could switch this to Baking Powder, but this came from the recepie)

1/4 tsp salt

1 tbsp (that's tablespoon) Agave Nectar (you can totally skip this; it's a low glycemic index sweetener)

2 tbsp olive oil (you could use melted coconut oil if you're worried about the heat on the olive oil). I wouldn't skip the oil though; buckwheat can be a bit sticky on the pan, even a no-stick.

water to consistency (I'm assuming you've made pancakes before; I never measure my water)

*Cook IMMEDIATELY after adding the water. Do not let it sit around for 20 min.

*Cook on lightly oiled no-stick pan; I use cast iron and it's great, but you do need a little oil as Buckwheat is a bit sticky.

Good lord, they were ridiculously light and fluffy. Amazingly so. Blew Bob's out of the water. I haven't tried 100% buckwheat flour yet, but after doing some more reading, it appears that would work fine as well.

I'm not sure why Bob's mix produces pancakes that are so heavy in comparison, because it's basically the same ingredients. Perhaps it's something about a fresh mix. Maybe the baking powder/soda goes flat???? I have no idea, but I'm doing all mine from scratch from now on. No question about it.

SUMMARY:

If you really want to just open a bag and use it, I think Bob's is great stuff, and good for you. If you want super fluffy pancakes, make your own; they're much better, and that way you can also go all-Buckwheat.

My only suggestion would be to make the packaging a little stronger for mailing as the bag had a small hole and a little leaked out . I had to place in a storage bag right away but a great product.

Bobo's Oat Bars All Natural, Chocolate, 3-Ounce Packages (Pack of 12)

Bobo's Oat Bars All Natural, Chocolate, 3-Ounce PackagesBobo's are avabilable at my local organic market and I love them. For a few cents cheaper, and free shipping, I ordered them from Amazon. Alas, the produce that arrived had passed it Best By date by two months! What a disappointment. I guess I'm better off paying full price for a fresh product. And naturally food items are non-returnable, even when they are listed as "new" but arrive "old"!!!

All of us love the Bobo Bars! When we've hiked and camped, Bobo's have always been along for the ride. They are the perfect on-the-go nutritional meal replacement choice. It's like having a bakery in your pack!

I've purchased 4 boxes of Bobo's Oat Bars in the Chocolate variety from Amazon in the past month. An acquaintance had told me how delicious they were, so I took a chance and purchased my first box before I embarked on a trip, planning to take some along for the journey. Unfortunately for my wallet, every person but one to whom I gave a bar loved these, so I sent some a box to enjoy. Prior to my first purchase, I did not realize these are soft, sort of brownie like in texture, a little sweet in a molasses sort of way (no molasses in the recipe, though), crumbly, and with two servings in a single bar. Fortunately, I placed a bar in a small resealable plastic bag for the airplane trip, so I was able to break off a little piece any time I felt hungry. That bag was a saving grace because when a bar was gone, I replaced it with another and you won't believe how often I pulled out that little bag. I ordered the first box as a gift after I put a little bite into my father's mouth while he was busy enjoying himself at a slot machine and I realized that he needed to keep these on hand for him and Mom to have on the days they go out. For those who have few teeth, these are edible because of the soft texture, yet they provide an enjoyable flavor. Hiker's took these along for a day trip, not worrying about the double serving per package, happily eating the entire bar. As they put it, they felt like they had a brownie along for the trek, much more enjoyable than other bars they'd taken in the past. One sister has enjoyed these on days when she's been unable to break for lunch at work, having them with coffee or tea and some deep breaths. Without eggs, butter or flour, they are terrific, even though Earth Balance has never been my favorite flavor. I'll admit that I was expecting a firmer bar with visible chocolate chips, but after the surprise of a crumbly moist baked good with a not very sweet cocoa flavor, I was hooked. I will gladly try the other varieties when I can find them for a lower cost than over two dollars per bar. A retail value of about thirty dollars is too high for a dozen bars, so I've deducted a star from this review. The one friend who did not love her Bobo's Oat Bar thought it tasted like cardboard and she claimed to have forced it down at work. She loves the SOYJOY bars which I do not care for, so I guess the world is balanced.

"... organic dark chocolate chips (organic sugar, organic chocolate liquor, organic cocoa butter, organic soy lecithin added as an emulsifier, organic vanilla) ..." from the ingredients list, BOBO'S OAT BARS, CHOCOLATE

Several weeks ago, I reviewed Bobo's Oat Bars All Natural, Banana, 3-Ounce Packages (Pack of 12), to which I awarded four stars based on its excellent oat flavor and "mouth feel." However, it suffered the loss of a fifth star because "the ostensible banana taste was so subtle as to be virtually non-existent."

Because I love chocolate, I decided to give Bobo another shot with the chocolate version of her oat snack.

Dark chocolate is on the bar's ingredients list as chips, no less. Buts it's a complete mystery to me where the essence of chocolate is lurking. Moreover, there isn't a chocolate chip in sight; I pulled the bar apart and examined it carefully. Granted, the bar has a darker shade of color than the other ones of the brand I've tried, so that at least implies chocolate is present. And, there's a faint nuance of some other flavor underlying the taste of oats, but, if anything, it's suggestive of molasses.

Mind you, I truly like these bars for the reasons previously stated. And I'll be sure to enjoy the remaining eleven of the dozen "chocolate" ones I purchased. But, as near as I can determine to date with the three types I've eaten, to claim there's any flavor present other than that of oats is a complete fiction and I've had to resist the impulse to award three stars or less for blatantly false advertising.

Bisquick Pancake and Baking Mix, Gluten-Free, 16-Ounce Boxes (Pack of 3)

Bisquick Pancake and Baking Mix, Gluten-Free, 16-Ounce BoxesWe LOVE the new gluten free Bisquick! I used to for cheddar biscuits mostly until we found out that we had a milk protein intolerance. Now, we are using this to make so many more recipes because it is dairy free and from what I can tell allergen free. The only thing I would like better (General Mills-if you are listening-I know I am not the only one that wants this) is if it came in bulk packaging. Just put the GF Bisquick in a larger box like the regular Bisquick and then sell in a 3 or 6 pack. Just mark that this review was helpful if you agree and maybe GM will listen! LOVE THIS-ORDER NOW!!

I usually make my own gluten free stuff from scratch and I love it, but the days when i feel lazy i feel like using a mix, and this one has to be the best one yet. Their mix tastes closely like the real (wheat) thing. I have made the pancakes, waffles, oven baked chicken, and strawberry shortcakes... absolutely delicious

Our family has been wheat-free for 3 years and gluten-free for 1 1/2 so we've tried just about every mix out there. I just found that Bisquick has a GF mix while in the grocery store and decided to give it a try. This is DEFINITELY the best mix that we have ever tasted: smooth, not grainy. I don't know that side-by-side with regular wheat pancakes that you would notice the difference!

This is one of the most versatile mixes I've found, and most recipes come out tasting very much like the Full of Gluten Blends. I, like many, am struggling with celiac's disease, and I've only just found out I have it, so I'm not quite sure what to buy, what's healthy, and what doesn't taste like cardboard.

Gluten Free is a way of life you have to adjust to in almost every way, from giving up many favorites, to training your pallet to love these new found grains.

Bisquick is Rice based, and is very much like it's original version, however be aware that the pancakes will be a little less fluffy and that you should follow the recipe to the T when it comes to these. Betty Crocker has a Recipe website they've published for you using this product that has quite a few tasty treats you'll love. When it calls for Vegetable Shortening, be sure to use it, for example, biscuits made without shortening, and only butter will be very dry and not very satisfying, even difficult to swallow. Use recipes that include shortening, and will result in moist, fluffy foods and breads will help you end up with an enjoyable addition to your meal.

Fun and Tasty Gluten Free Recipes for this mix can be found on the Betty Crocker website, they won't allow me to post the link here, sorry.

UPDATE: ** Fun Tip about this and other Gluten Free Mixes, My mom Figured out that when you're mixing together your ingredients and you're using one that calls for milk, that if you mix together ONLY the BASE MIX and the MILK and let it set for about 15 minutes before continuing with your recipe and adding other ingredients, the end result is much fluffier and tastier ** This would be much like making tapioca pudding, you have to let the milk and tapioca soak to 'activate the tapioca' before moving on, so I think that type of reaction is what's happening here with the Bisquick Mix. YAY for Mom!

Hope that helps you with your purchasing decision.

Thanks for reading!
