Bob's Red Mill Oats Steel Cut, 24 oz

Bob's Red Mill Oats Steel Cut, 24 ozI have been using this product for several months now. It is exceptionally good. Has a nutty texture and flavor. It is filling and holds my appetite until at least lunch time, which regular oatmeal that you buy does not. This is really good stuff. I have tried other brands, like the one that is in a can and called Irish Oatmeal and it is okay, but a little more expensive too. I nearly always buy this one because I just like it better.

Nice, fresh tasting oatmeal with a slightly nutty texture. If you like the texture of well cooked brown rice, you'll love this oatmeal.

Steel-cut oats are simply the hulled grain which is then chopped into a few pieces by a steel cutting burr. This is instead of being squashed flat by steel rollers, which results in the more commonly sold "rolled oats". Squash them even flatter and they are sold as instant oats, which are so fine they aren't too far away from being oat flour (which explains why they cook so fast).

These steel cut oats need to be cooked longer to get them cooked all the way through. Fully cooked, they are slightly firm (not hard and crunchy) in the center. I like to wash them with fresh water a time or two before cooking to rinse some of the oat flour off. This reduces the tendency for the oats to become sticky and gelatinous.

If you like your grains to have the taste and texture of grains instead of jiggly mush, then these are great oats!

We really love using these oats with the recipe I got from Food Network. It is a great quick morning meal for my family when I make a large recipe on Saturday and keep the left overs in the fridge. The kids scoop what they want into a bowl, microwave it and then add their favorite toppings.

SO much better than rolled oats!!

You will never want a dish of ordinary oatmeal after you try Steel Cut Oats. The flavor is so much better than regular oatmeal. Of course they take a little longer to fix than regular oatmeal, but you deserve the best. They are high in protein and have no cholesterol. Bob's Red Mill Old Fashioned Steel Cut Oats are the best I've tried. Try them you won't be disappointed.

This product is the best. Some are cowed by slow cooking oatmeal. However, looking around on the web you will see that many use rice-cookers, crockpots, or just microwave them (6 tablespoons take 52 minutes with four cups of water). They are immensely healthful, and you can add dollops of fruit, cinnamin, walnuts, vanilla and wheat germ to have a really spectacular breakfast. Some people make extra to put in fridge for coming days. Bob's is the best!

Bakery on Main Gluten Free Granola, Cranberry Orange Cashew, 12 oz

Bakery on Main Gluten Free Granola, Cranberry Orange Cashew, 12 ozI've tried several of the Bakery on Main gluten free cereal flavors. Most are too sweet for my taste for breakfast. However, I do enjoy them as dry snack food. I am currently eating a bag of Triple Berry Crunch. I find this flavor not to my liking at all. The berries are SOUR and the granola has what I would describe as an odd consistency. It is VERY high in fiber with 9 grams per portion. Since one portion does not seem to be enough for breakfast, I eat 1.5-2 portions. TOO MUCH fiber at one time!

I ALSO tried the Bakery on Main gluten free granola bars. Somehow, with whatever liquid is used to hold the granola together, they come across as soggy.

Pineapple Jelly

Pineapple JellyVery misleading to call this pineapple "jelly". This is more like pineapple syrup with chunks. It is probably impossible to get pineapple to jel, due to the enzymes in it. Mr. BarryFarm ought to give it up. Very disappointed.

It took a long time to ship. The jelly was extremly sweet and short on the pineapple taste. Between the price of the product and the cost of shipping it was a "high priced disappointment". Won't make that mistake again!

Nature's Path Organic Granola Bars, Peanut Choco', 5-Count Boxes (Pack of 6)

Nature's Path Organic Granola Bars, Peanut Choco', 5-Count BoxesI love this bar and that is probably because I love any treat that combines peanuts and chocolate. I don't consider this a health bar. This has a good amount of sugar and a good amount of fat. I eat them because they are a great cheat treat. When I eat well all day, I look forward to this soft but chewy bar that has real peanuts and what seems to be real chocolate (I detest bars that proclaim to have real chocolate but instead incorporate a fake chocolaty substance).

What I like about this bar:

1) The taste Wow! For a granola bar the taste is phenomenal. The picture on the box does not lie. You can see peanuts and oats and the chocolate topping tastes awesome. The texture of the oats/nuts melds well with the oats and nuts.

2) Portable and easy to pack If you try to stay aware of your daily calorie intake, it is always great to have easy to carry snacks with their calories clearly labeled. Who has time to count out the exact number of pretzels that comprise 150 calories? That is part of the appeal of a granola bar. You've got a 150 calorie food item that can be placed in a purse or coat pocket and you are out the door.

3) The company has made a conscious effort to reduce packaging in order to reduce impact on the environment. The box is made of 100% recycled materials.

What is questionable about this bar:

1) This is a snack/treat bar and nothing else This is not a healthful nutrition bar. The product packaging does not necessarily say this is healthful. It does use the words "organic goodness" and boasts "9 grams of whole grains". These notations may make some think this is a really healthy treat. But it's not. The bar has low fiber (2g) and pretty high sugar for a 150 calorie bar (11 grams).

2)If you use snacks to hold you over, you probably should find a snack with at least 4 grams of fiber. The 2 gram bar is not going to tide you over very long.

If you feed these to your kids, there is a good likelihood they will like them. They are pretty sweet. But again with the sugar, what else are you giving your kids during the day? Four grams of sugar is equivalent to 1 teaspoon of sugar. So you have about 2 and 3/4 teaspoons in this bar. With everything else your kids consume during the day, (chocolate milk? orange juice? sandwich with jam?), the sugar in this bar may not be worth it to you. Kids usually need 1200 to 1700 calories a day. While there is no prescribed amount of sugar for a kid during the day, I have read that the calories from added sugar should be limited to 10% which, on the low end, would translate to 7 teaspoons of sugar and 11 teaspoons on the high end.

Summary:

Nature's Path has created a very tasty granola bar with quality ingredients. Props to the company for not saying this was a health or nutrition bar on the box. I am reviewing this as a treat bar and as a treat, it is a delicious option. If it were being reviewed for health, I would not be able to give it four stars as it has high sugar, high fat and low fiber. Don't expect it to hold you over for hours but do expect it to satisfy your sweet tooth.

These granola bars are made in the United States.

I ordered these in bulk as I've purchased them locally. Everywhere I have had them they have been so fresh they "almost" fall apart. The ones I ordered here through Amazon came STALE and because of that have a poor taste and are hard to chew. Very disappointed as they are expensive!

If your idea of a bar is something sweet and mushy, then go for it. The peanuts and chocolate make a very small fraction of the bar. The rest is just mush. There is no crunch.

These organic bars are delicious! Very subtle peanut butter taste that combines very well with the chocolate.

Amazing Grass Berry Flavor Drink Powder, Green SuperFood, 15-Count Packets

Amazing Grass Berry Flavor Drink Powder, Green SuperFood, 15-Count PacketsThis Berry Super food is very very good for you. It gives you extra energy and immunity in my opinion. It is great if you are on the go and in need of greens like spinach and kale and wheat grass. I prefer the chocolate flavor even though this berry is good, so I gave it 4 of 5 stars. But it really is good, especially in a smoothie or as I prefer it in cold cereal or in oatmeal (just don't heat it up with this product in it, add it last/cold for best use).

This vibrant green-colored powder is chock full of delicious fruity taste. Don't let the color put you off at all! If you like the idea of increasing your (organic) fruit and vegetable intake, this is a product for you. Amazing Grass is a great, responsive company and their chocolate-flavored powder -like a better-tasting version of cocoa powder -is delicious, too. Though most use them in smoothies and drinks, I use these powders to flavor oatmeal and sprinkle on cereal, salads, grains, or anything else, when the mood strikes.

I bought this as a healthy alternative to the powdered drinks we've been purchasing. We've all already given up soda, and currently purchase a lot of 'Crystal Lite' type of products. I'm still concerned with the chemicals and artificial sweetners, though, so still searching for even healthier options. I love the ingredients and nutrients this provdes, but I have to say the taste is not the best. To quote my teenage son, "It tastes like I wrapped my lips around the discharge of the lawn mower." Definately has a grassy flavor with a hint of berry. We're still experimenting with ways to improve the taste my son likes mixing it with tea & lemon. We will probably try other flavors from Amazing Grass because we like the concept. Maybe it will grow on us ;-)

Great Product. I've tried a bunch of different green drink products from a lot of different manufacturers, and most taste either like pond water or supper sweet pond water (they all look like pond water). This one has a slight berry flavor that is subtle and not overpowering. I've bought this product several times and will continue to buy it.

I purchased this product after a recommendation from a friend and after reading the reviews here on Amazon. I mix the powder with a 12 oz bottle of Tropicana Pomegrante Blueberry juice. I shook the bottle before drinking and it tasted very good. If you shake the drink very well after adding the powder it seems to minimize the grit. I barely notice the grass taste. I have also mixed it with Gatorade Fruit Punch and aside from it turning the GatorAde to an almost muddy color it didn't taste bad. I will continue to mix with other fruit drinks since it makes it more palatable and it added another fruit to my daily intake.

Bobo's Oat Bars All Natural, Cranberry, 3-Ounce Packages (Pack of 12)

Bobo's Oat Bars All Natural, Cranberry, 3-Ounce PackagesThese moderately chewy (but not sticky) bars are not chock full of cranberries, but there are just enough to give some cranberry flavor. I love these bars as a quick breakfast they are big enough to feel like a real meal. They are gently sweetened not so sweet that I feel like I'm eating a candy bar, but sweet enough to be enjoyable somehow they exactly matched the level of sweetness that I like in a "real" bowl of oatmeal. As for the other flavors ... my favorite flavor is coconut, and my least favorite is chocolate (and I love chocolate so that tells you something). I typically buy the coconut, strawberry, and cranberry bars.

I got this product from whole foods the first time and loved it for a quick filling snack on the go. I enjoy the tangy zip of the cranberry with a hint of orange.

This treat is much more satisfying than any other snack bar I've tried and I've tried a lot being a woman on the go. Great as a quick breakfast, pre-workout snack or sweet treat(instead of cookies etc.). Bobo's bars are now a staple in my pantry. Didn't give 5 stars because they are pretty expensive.

These Oat Bars are very tasty, and extremely convenient. However, they do have a log of sugar and calories. Also, they are a bit expensive.

I am the only one in my family that likes these. They are basically a block of oatmeal. I like oatmeal so the are good with me. I like the fact that they only have 10g of sugar. Compared to other power bars and granola they are too expensive so I will stick with Cliff and other bars for now and eat my oatmeal.

Bear Valley Pemmican Fruit 'n Nut ( 12x3.75 OZ)

Bear Valley Pemmican Fruit 'n NutIf you are trying to lose weight, don't get these bars! They are calorie-dense. One bar has almost 400 calories. I have tried many other competitor's bars and this one actually tastes like food and not some chunk of chewy dough or play-doh. The bar is baked and preservative-free with generous chunks of fruit and nuts within. The taste and texture is wonderful and does not induce much thirst. My suggestion though is to get a variety of flavors so you don't get tired of them too quickly. If you hike/trek and need lots of calories in a compact form, I recommend these. I bought 3 boxes of mixed varieties and ate one a day for lunch in college and was never hungry. In fact, I could barely stay awake during lecture because of the caloric load. So they're best for those on the move. The closest bar in taste would be the Clif bars. However, they lack the chunkiness of nuts and fruit and have 100 fewer calories. Also, Clif bars kinda look like turds in foil...not too appetizing imo.

This had been part of a 'kit' I used to be able to find. Glad to find it after all these years.

British soldiers in the Boer War could march 36 hours before collapsing, after a meal of pemmican-and it was found in the supplies of both the North Pole and South Pole explorations. Having read those accounts, I knew I had to find this product.

This modern version is not of the the same ingredients as the earlier ones-e.g., bear grease and cranberries-(that may have been the Lewis & Clark recipe)-but modern Pemmican retains the compact and nutritious product that it was in the beginning.

I shopped around in the local stores but all I found were little candy-bar type snack foods, expensive and full of high fructose corn syrup.

Thank you Amazon for providing this quality product at such a good price.

I keep a few bars at work in my desk. Along with an apple, it makes a perfect meal, and so much healthier, faster, and less expensive than eating off the lunch truck.

I've shared it with two people and they both liked it as well.
