Bob's Red Mill Oats Steel Cut, 24 oz

Bob's Red Mill Oats Steel Cut, 24 ozI have been using this product for several months now. It is exceptionally good. Has a nutty texture and flavor. It is filling and holds my appetite until at least lunch time, which regular oatmeal that you buy does not. This is really good stuff. I have tried other brands, like the one that is in a can and called Irish Oatmeal and it is okay, but a little more expensive too. I nearly always buy this one because I just like it better.

Nice, fresh tasting oatmeal with a slightly nutty texture. If you like the texture of well cooked brown rice, you'll love this oatmeal.

Steel-cut oats are simply the hulled grain which is then chopped into a few pieces by a steel cutting burr. This is instead of being squashed flat by steel rollers, which results in the more commonly sold "rolled oats". Squash them even flatter and they are sold as instant oats, which are so fine they aren't too far away from being oat flour (which explains why they cook so fast).

These steel cut oats need to be cooked longer to get them cooked all the way through. Fully cooked, they are slightly firm (not hard and crunchy) in the center. I like to wash them with fresh water a time or two before cooking to rinse some of the oat flour off. This reduces the tendency for the oats to become sticky and gelatinous.

If you like your grains to have the taste and texture of grains instead of jiggly mush, then these are great oats!

We really love using these oats with the recipe I got from Food Network. It is a great quick morning meal for my family when I make a large recipe on Saturday and keep the left overs in the fridge. The kids scoop what they want into a bowl, microwave it and then add their favorite toppings.

SO much better than rolled oats!!

You will never want a dish of ordinary oatmeal after you try Steel Cut Oats. The flavor is so much better than regular oatmeal. Of course they take a little longer to fix than regular oatmeal, but you deserve the best. They are high in protein and have no cholesterol. Bob's Red Mill Old Fashioned Steel Cut Oats are the best I've tried. Try them you won't be disappointed.

This product is the best. Some are cowed by slow cooking oatmeal. However, looking around on the web you will see that many use rice-cookers, crockpots, or just microwave them (6 tablespoons take 52 minutes with four cups of water). They are immensely healthful, and you can add dollops of fruit, cinnamin, walnuts, vanilla and wheat germ to have a really spectacular breakfast. Some people make extra to put in fridge for coming days. Bob's is the best!
