Earnest Eats Granola Plank, Blueberry Vanilla Crackle, 3-Ounce Planks (Pack of 6)

Earnest Eats Granola Plank, Blueberry Vanilla Crackle, 3-Ounce PlanksLove the product! It's filled with healthy things and tastes great. You do have to remember that one plank is supposed to be 2 servings.

I was a huge fan of the blueberry planks. Up until March/April the company stopped making them. My subscribe service with Amazon was placed on hold. I emailed Earnest Eats to ask if they were discontinuing the product. I got an answer that they were looking for a different manufacturer.

Fast forward, they shipped their product to Amazon. I got notice that I would receive my order for this month. However, when I got it, its not the same thing they changed the recipe its a freaking cookie.

Basically its a bigger form of their trail bar line maybe twice as big. Its not crunchy or cracklely. This new version sucks.

It totally doesn't even look like the item on the amazon photo right now. It looks like their Earnest Eats Baked Almond Trail Mix Bar. If I wanted that I would have bought that.

Fantastic Granola Bar. Not the typical cardboard with flavor and some nuts. This one has great body and texture, along with fantastic taste. I work out on the ocean and some days I never know when I will get back in so these are my emergency lunch supply and do a fantastic job. I recently purchased a cran lemon zest food bar from Earnest Eats (aka Honest Foods) at a health food store. I don't usually buy these things but I was starving and I liked that the packaging was clear so I could actually see what was in the bar. It was absolutely delicious! I have not seen this brand around very much but I will certainly be on the look out for it now.

This is an oat cereal bar, plain and simple. Thick "planks" of chewy oats and some other big, puffed cereal with a few almonds and blueberries tossed in. I was completely disappointed, especially at the price I paid for these bland bars and also at the lack of many berries and nuts. I loved the trailmix bar from this company but this thing was way overpriced and tasted so "oaty" that my daughter wouldn't eat more than a few bites. We swigged lots of liquid after eating thinking a bowl of actual oatmeal would have been more pleasurable.

Incidentally, the 5 star review above mine isn't even for this particular bar...

Glutino Gluten Free Breakfast Bars Cherry -- 7.1 oz Each / Pack of 3

Glutino Gluten Free Breakfast Bars Cherry -- 7.1 oz Each / Pack of 3These bars come five per box. They look rather like a large Fig Newton, with a fruit center, though they aren't as sweet and chewy as that cookie.

This product fills me up as a quick breakfast. It has a decent taste. The consistency is unlike a protein bar, which is usually quite thick and chewy. These bars resemble a biscuit more than a typical meal bar in texture, not crunchy, not chewy, somewhere in between. In spite of 17 grams of sugar, it does not taste very sweet, at least to me as a person with a "sweet tooth." The not-too-sweet flavor, though, might be a plus to people who don't like a "sickly-sweet" meal bar.

This breakfast bar has very little protein in it, so it is not by any stretch a "protein bar." However, its creators do not advertise it as such. They do claim that it is a "good source of fiber, but it has only 3 grams of fiber. It has 30 total grams of carbohydrates and, as stated above, 17 of that is sugars. The bar claims to be "low fat," and that it true. There are only 2 grams of fat, and no trans fats.

Basically, I would describe this bar as the equivalent of eating a cup of gluten-free cereal, but it is more convenient than cereal for someone on the go.

At 1.42 ounce (40 gm), these breakfast bars are about average in size for a meal bar these days, around the weight/density of an average candy bar.

Most of the ingredients are fairly healthy, as processed food goes, and the price is reasonable, approximately $1.00 per bar in most venues, which is cheaper than many protein bars.

I liked this bar, but I am not wild about it, and several of the ingredients (see below) give me pause as to how unhealthy they are.

Ingredients listed on box I bought:

Cherry filling (sugar, apple powder [calcium stearate], white grape juice concentrate, glycerin, cherries [may contain pits], water, corn starch, canola oil, citric acid, sodium alginate, carrot and black currant juice, malic acid, dicalcium phosphate, dried citrus pulp, sodium citrate, sodium hexametaphosphate, natural flavor, chick pea flour, potato starch, fructose, pear juice concentrate, raisin paste, inulin, canola oil, tapioca starch, white rice flour, water, sodium bicarbonate.

Ingredients for this productlisted on Glutino website--which is slightly different:

Ingredients: Cherry filling (sugar, glucose, apple powder [calcium stearate], white grape juice concentrate, water, cherries [may contain pits], glycerine, canola oil, citric acid, pectin, fruit and vegetable extract for color, sodium citrate, calcium chloride, flavor), chick pea flour, corn flour, fructose, pear juice concentrate, raisin paste, inulin, canola oil, tapioca starch, white rice flour, water, cinnamon, sodium bicarbonate.

Below is an analysis of some of the ingredients listed above that may be unfamiliar to many consumers:

Calcium stearate: This is a white powdery substance which has been a food additive in the U.S. since 1924. It is also used in cosmetics. It reduces caking and increases the flow rate of any substance it is added to. Almost all calcium sterate in the U.S. is derived from plant oils such as palm oil or coconut oil, but occasionally beef tallow is used, meaning any food containing it cannot be 100% guaranteed to be vegetarian/vegan.

Glycerin: Also known as glycerine or glycerol, it is used in commercial foods and beverages to impart moisture, provide sweetness, and emulsify and preserve food. Glycerine can be made from food-grade fats and oils or petroleum products. Neither food, cosmetic nor pharmaceutical companies in the U.S. are required to reveal the source of the glycerin they use.

Citric acid: This is a natural acid found in many fruits which is a safe preservative.

Sodium alginate: This is a flavorless gum extracted from the cell walls of brown algae which is used in processed foods to increase viscosity and as an emulsifier, particularly in gel-like foods. Sodium alginate is also used in medicine to chelate radioactive toxins from the body.

Malic acid: A natural acid derived from fruits which is a safe preservative. In therapeutic doses (much more than is in this breakfast bar), malic acid increases muscle performance by reducing fatigue, and it helps energy production by increasing the cells' production of adenosine triphosphate (ATP). It has many other health benefits as well. It has been used to treat fibromyalgia, a condition of intense pain in muscles and tendons. It can help chelate (remove) toxic heavy metals from the body such as mercury, aluminum and lead. It helps reduce dry mouth (a side effect of many prescription medications) by helping the body to produce saliva.

Dicalcium phosphate: A dietary supplement created by a reactive combination of calcium oxide and phosphoric acid. In the food industry, it is often added to cereal and grain products as a supplement to the diet of calcium and phosphorus.

Sodium citrate: This is used in food products as an emulsifier and refers to any one of the three sodium salts of citric acid, and most commonly the third one: monosodium citrate, disodium citrate, and trisodium citrate. Sodium citrate is metabolized to sodium bicarbonate (baking soda), thus acting as a systemic alkalizer. This could actually balance out the systemic acidity caused by many of the other ingredients in this bar, such as the sweeteners.

Sodium hexametaphosphate: This chemical is used to thicken, emulsify and texturize a variety of foods. The phosphorus in this food additive is used to prevent the deterioration of food and cosmetics by preventing the corrosion (rust) of metallic materials used in packaging (each of these breakfast bars is individually wrapped in what looks like an aluminum-foil type covering). Since it can sometimes be contaminated with lead, its usage on a food product is a potential concern.

Natural flavor: The definition of natural flavor under the Code of Federal Regulations is: "The essential oil, oleoresin, essence or extractive, protein hydrolysate, distillate, or any product of roasting, heating or enzymolysis, which contains the flavoring constituents derived from a spice, fruit or fruit juice, vegetable or vegetable juice, edible yeast, herb, bark, bud, root, leaf or similar plant material, meat, seafood, poultry, eggs, dairy products, or fermentation products thereof, whose significant function in food is flavoring rather than nutritional" (21CFR101.22). That essentially means that natural flavor is derived from a real food, but the process by which it is derived is unexplained and there is no way to know how safe or healthy a natural flavoring is.

Inulin: This is a starch that occurs naturally in a variety of fruits, vegetables, and herbs such as onions, wheat, asparagus, bananas, leeks and artichokes. The inulin created for commercial use is usually derived from chicory roots. It is used as a food additive to improve taste. It is also used in medicine in therapeutic doses to lower blood levels of cholesterol and triglycerides, for weight loss, and to prevent constipation. Similar to fructooligosaccharides (FOS), inulin cannot be digested or absorbed in the stomach, so it does not raise blood sugar. It promotes bowel health because of its prebiotic effect in the bowels, that is, it encourages the growth of healthy bowel bacteria which use inulin and FOS to grow. FOS is similar but not identical to inulin. They have a different chemical structure. FOS chains of molecules are shorter than inulin chains.

Sodium bicarbonate: Baking soda.

McCann's Artisan Collection Instant Oatmeal, Pumpkin Pecan with Vietnamese Cinnamon, 8-Count Packets

McCann's Artisan Collection Instant Oatmeal, Pumpkin Pecan with Vietnamese Cinnamon, 8-Count PacketsGood but no real pumpkin or pumpkin spice flavor. Had to jazz it up with my own spices. Better texture and overall flavor than your run-of-the-mill cheapy oatmeal.

I already like McCann's plain, regular oatmeal so tried this for kids going to school. Box is about same weight as Quaker (12.1 oz vs Quaker's 12.3 oz) but McCann's has 8 packets vs 10 which I like as there is more in a packet. Who only makes 1 packet anyway which is enough for about a toddler..and even with the bigger packet we still use 2 each as adults.

Ingredients in McCCann's vs Quaker: McCann's has higher fat/sodium/carbs which is expected..packet is bigger. Same amount of protein though (bigger packet so should have been more...) and no vitamins listed like Quaker which fortifies theirs. Quaker lists "whole grain oats" while McCann's lists "Irish Oats"..so...are "Irish Oats" whole grain and..what makes them special? Quaker has a lot of extra "stuff" like soy lecithin, vanilla extract, natural flavor, calcium carbonate, guar gum, oat flour, caramel color, reduced iron, vitamin a palmitate and may contain soy and milk. McCann's is simple: Irish oats, evaporated cane syrup, pecans, sea salt, cinnamon, natural pumpkin flavor. (Was hoping to find some kind of dried pumpkin pieces...oh well)

McCann's wins with us in natural and delicious taste, plenty of nuts, bigger packet and simple ingredients although a point off for DOUBLE the cost of Quaker (ouch). Find specials and coupons and it is WORTH it. Still wondering why "Irish oats" are any different and if they are even whole grain....but looking forward to trying all the other flavors. :)

McCann's is my preferred brand of oatmeal.

I use their steel cut and quick cook oats all the time and think their instant (plain) is the best I've ever tasted, so I was very excited when I saw this product on Amazon! I didn't even mind the price, figuring it was a sure thing it because it was McCann's and pumpkin I love pumpkin!

Unfortunately, I was VERY disappointed.

I could discern no pumpkin and it was so sweet, i had to cut it down with packet of plain oatmeal.

The packets are still in the cupboard. I offer it as a breakfast choice when we have guests. One person said they liked it and the other agreed with my assessment.

We bought some oatmeal that was suppose to be instant from Costco and it was from the same company but we had to cook and cook and cook the stuff before it would be edible. Needless to say we returned it to Costco. I really didn't want to spend 20 minutes in the morning cooking oatmeal although the oatmeal itself was really good. I saw this on amazon and thought I'd give it a go. This stuff IS actually instant and took a whole 70 seconds to make in our microwave and it turned out great.

Awake English Breakfast Tea 20 Bags

Awake English Breakfast Tea 20 BagsI ordered four boxes of this tea thinking I was going to get Tazo Awake Black Tea as stated in the product description. What I received instead was Tazo Awake "English Breakfast" Tea.

After researching on the internet, I found that Starbucks/Tazo has changed the blend. It's not the same tea anymore and a lot of customers are unhappy about it. I am too. I wish these companies would leave good products alone.

I will be returning this tea. If the product description had been updated to match the new/revised product I wouldn't be losing money on shipping. Oh well, live and learn. Hopefully the product descriptions will catch up to the product changes to save others the hassle.

The 2 boxes that arrived have an expiration date in 45 days. Normally you get more than that out of a box of tea... and there is no way I can drink 40 bags in that time frame. I will not buy from this seller again.

This is a very delicious tea. It is usually what I get when I go to Starbucks so naturally I bought some to brew for myself as well. Personally, I do taste a difference from a regular black tea. My other "go-to" tea is called "English Teatime" by Bigelow. It is an affordable yet delicious tea, and it truly is a plain black tea, it tastes different than this. The other reviewer is correct, be careful not to brew it too long or it will get bitter on you. It does however have a citrusy/milder undertone to it. I'm assuming this is the "cherry" flavoring it mentions. Overall, a very good tea and what I reach for when I want something a little bit better than my run-of-the-mill grocery store brand. (Although Tazo is sold in grocery stores..)

Bob's Red Mill Buckwheat Pancake Mix, 26-Ounce Bags (Pack of 4)

Bob's Red Mill Buckwheat Pancake Mix, 26-Ounce BagsI simply love Bob's Red mill products, and love Amazon for selling them for quite a bit less than Whole Paycheck. I've been enjoying a lot of things from them recently, including Kamut Breakfast Cereal and a really delicious soup mix. Their Buckwheat Pancake mix is another example of a healthy, tasty, and reasonably priced item from Bob's Red Mill. I got a taste for Buckwheat pancakes as a kid (My mom used to make them on cold mornings in January), but stopped eating them as an adult. My wife LOVES pancakes, and while I enjoy them too, I find the regular kind not keep me filled up, nor are they particularly healthy. I remembered that I used to really like buckwheat pancakes, and decided to hunt some up. I found these, and have been enjoying them ever since.

The mix is easy to prepare, but this isn't a 'complete' mix and does require an egg and some oil in addition to cold water. As an alternative you can use milk, which gives the pancakes a slightly richer flavor. Milk or water, either way they're tasty! Buckwheat is a wholegrain, meaning these fill you up and keep you filled much longer than traditional pancakes which are full of sugar and cheap carbs. I can eat probably a dozen regular pancakes. I can only manage to put away 5-6 of these guys!

A few recommendations on preparation:

1) Mix the pancake batter and then let it sit 30 minutes or even an hour in your refrigerator. It makes the pancakes lighter and fluffier.

2) Go for thinner batter rather than thick. It makes the pancakes easier to cook, and gives you a tastier pancake as a result.

3) Cook on medium heat, not high. Because the batter is dark to begin with, it is harder to tell when your pancakes are done without overcooking them. Use less heat to help you get them cooked perfectly.

4) You can easily mix this batter with a regular pancake mix to make 'hybrid' cakes if you find these are a bit too thick for your taste. I've gone that route a few times for my wife since she likes her pancakes less dense than these.

5) Get yourself some real maple syrup! Nothing goes as well with Buckwheat pancakes than real maple syrup! That's how the American pioneers ate them, and I love feeling like I'm participating in an American tradition when I make these for my family.

6) Eat them for dinner! Pancakes and eggs for dinner is amazing.

You can't go wrong with these pancakes. Buy them. Cook them. Eat them. Repeat!

I remember Buckwheat Pancakes from years ago. The thought of these heavy, rich tasting pancakes brings a sigh to my lips. My Mom useed to cook these when I was a kid, and I always loved them...now, I fixed them for my Grandson, and he feels the same...3 pancakes, 2 eggs, and lots of butter and real Homemade Hot Sugar and vanalla suyrp...OMG...soooo good. layer a pancake, then egg, then pancake, then another egg, finished by another pancake to make the Family Stacker! I found this brand a few years back, and it is the real thing...easy to make, healthy, and Lord knows...eat 3 of these and you will NOT be hungry in a couple hours! They Stick with you. Is a common breakfast item from long ago...settlers and farmers...eat these and you could plow a field, and have more energy to make it till lunch! Be Well, and Blessings upon all...

These buckwheat pancakes come out great and you don't need to feel guilty about eating something with an ingredients list that is frighteningly long. Like someone else mentioned, these pancakes are best served with maple syrup, not aunt jemima high fructose corn syrup. Unfortunately, I haven't tried the mix in waffle form. Throw in Bananas or chocolate chips or walnuts etc for a twist!

Here's the recipe on the back of the package (I've bought three packages in the past couple months and just recently put one and a half into a container for better storage (threw out the package)and looked all over the internet for it!):

Pancake Mix:

1 cup mix

1 egg

1 tsp oil

3/4 cup cold milk

Waffle Mix:

1 cup mix

2 eggs

2 tsp oil

3/4 cup cold milk

My grandkids don't even know they are eating whole grain pancakes, the texture is like regular pancakes. I also like the fact that Bob's Red Mill mixes are all organic but the price is very reasonable. These pancakes are easy to make and my husband asks for them often, many times for dinner. I gave my daughter a package of this pancake mix and now her family is hooked on these pancakes. I highly recommend this mix, once you try it you will be glad you did.

BOB'S VS. BISQUICK:

I went to Bob's Buckwheat Pancake Mix (have now gone through two 4-packs!) from using Bisquick, mainly to get away from the refined flour and get some better, whole grain nutrition. I'm happy I did, and wouldn't go back; it's my body I'm feeding. The negative is, and some others have noted it here, is that this mix doesn't produce particularly light, fluffy pancakes. They're good, but not super light like Bisquick did. Maybe if you beat and fold in egg whites (but I don't eat eggs). That's not to say they don't rise, or they aren't good, and great tasting.

BOB'S VS MADE FROM SCRATCH

No comparison. I bought organic bulk buckwheat flour (which you can get pretty inexpensive in a 25lb bag if you're a nut) from Amazon; search for "Great River Organic Milling." I then made my own egg-less, butter-less, milk-less version from something I found on the web:

3/4c Buckwheat flour

3/4c Whole wheat flour

1.5 tsp Baking Powder

1/2 tsp Baking Soda (I think you could switch this to Baking Powder, but this came from the recepie)

1/4 tsp salt

1 tbsp (that's tablespoon) Agave Nectar (you can totally skip this; it's a low glycemic index sweetener)

2 tbsp olive oil (you could use melted coconut oil if you're worried about the heat on the olive oil). I wouldn't skip the oil though; buckwheat can be a bit sticky on the pan, even a no-stick.

water to consistency (I'm assuming you've made pancakes before; I never measure my water)

*Cook IMMEDIATELY after adding the water. Do not let it sit around for 20 min.

*Cook on lightly oiled no-stick pan; I use cast iron and it's great, but you do need a little oil as Buckwheat is a bit sticky.

Good lord, they were ridiculously light and fluffy. Amazingly so. Blew Bob's out of the water. I haven't tried 100% buckwheat flour yet, but after doing some more reading, it appears that would work fine as well.

I'm not sure why Bob's mix produces pancakes that are so heavy in comparison, because it's basically the same ingredients. Perhaps it's something about a fresh mix. Maybe the baking powder/soda goes flat???? I have no idea, but I'm doing all mine from scratch from now on. No question about it.

SUMMARY:

If you really want to just open a bag and use it, I think Bob's is great stuff, and good for you. If you want super fluffy pancakes, make your own; they're much better, and that way you can also go all-Buckwheat.

Living Intentions Superfood Cereal, Chia Ginger, 9 Ounce

Living Intentions Superfood Cereal, Chia Ginger, 9 OunceI was looking for the same product I already have purchased several times at Whole Foods. This is it! This satisfies my need for crunch, health and cinnamon.

I cannot believe it needs to cost $12.00/ pound though. I get 4 servings per pound. Maybe it shouldn't taste so good :-))

Most cereals cost around $5.00 for a 10oz box. This cereal is out of the question, except on rare occasions. Too bad...

I love this stuff! It is an excellent nutritious breakfast cereal great with almond or other milk. I also like it as a snack straight out of the bag. Great crunch, great taste, healthy ingredients with good omega fats. There are no gluten ingredients in this cereal, but it's whole grain and provides a good amount of fiber. Highly recommended for taste, quality, and nutritional value.

I do not consider myself to have a delicate palate, but I must say that I am repulsed by the taste of this particular one. I believe it is the ginger, but I find it very unpalatable with milk or just raw. I feel compelled to finish it because of the price. That being said, it is a nutritional powerhouse. The product is jam packed with very nutritious ingredients, so if you can overlook the taste, then maybe this is for you. I am moving on to the next flavor.

Chai Tea Latte Mix

Vanilla Powder ChaiMy favorite coffe shop uses this brand for their chais that they sell. I used to be able to get Pacific Chai at my grocery store, but they stopped carrying it. Luckily, Amazon to the rescue! I know it's not nutritious but it can warm you up and it is totally delicious. My daughter and I prefer the vanilla flavor, and if you heat up some Silk brand soy milk & blend it with the mix ( instead of the water the label calls for) it is really amazing! Plus, we women need to get our iso-flavanoids, and this is a really yummy way. I've used regular milk too, but believe me, for some reason the soy is so much better. I've even got my totally soya-phobic co-workers drinking it that way, and the owner of the coffe shop actually put soy milk on the menu as an option with the chai. Like my title states, it's probably not authentic chai but it is still super tasty and the spices ( cinnamon, ginger, cloves) are very warming. It's the perfect drink on a cold day or if you have the chills and can't seem to get warm. The label says you can serve it cold but I haven't tried that yet; to me it just seems like a hot drink. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because the ingredients really do sucknon-dairy creamer w/coconut oil & corn syrup solids. Black tea is waaaay down on the list. But, I just take it for what it is; an occasional indulgence when I crave something hot & sweet & spicy ( of the non-masculine variety! ) to warm me up.

I have tried many varieties of chai tea, both powdered and liquid. This chai is full-flavoured with a bit more of a kick to it than other chai teas. This is a good thing because I can use less powder to get a satifying drink.

My sister introduced me to vanilla chai several years ago, our favorite being Dunkin Donuts vanilla chai which is no longer available. We, then, went on a quest to find another "favorite vanilla chai". We definitely found it in Pacific Vanilla Chai. While I liked it best when it was available in the striped bags rather than in the canisters (don't know why), it is excellent. I recommend this beverage to anyone who enjoys tea. As their slogan says, it really is "the taste of peace and quiet". Enjoy!

Yellow Corn Grits, 1 lb.

Yellow Corn Grits, 1 lb.I was hoping I found a source for "real" grits. I was tipped off that this wasn't the real deal when the label said something about "mush". It fits the definition of mush i.e. soft or soggy mass.

I have been searching for real grits since my supplier retired. He refurbished an old grist mill as a hobby then decided to use the plentiful local corn to mill grits. They were fabulous, the real kind that you had to add water, let the hulls float to the top, pour off the water, add more water, then cook for 45 minutes. Lots of butter, salt, and pepper and there's nothing better.
