Quaker Steel Cut Oats 24 oz (4 pack)

I grew up on various hot cereal products and frankly, I loved almost all of them. My wife however, didn't like ANY of them. One day as we sat in the restaurant of a nice bay area hotel, she ordered 'steel cut oatmeal' for her breakfast... and I joined her. She loved it.

I found Quaker's Steel Cut Oatmeal hard to find...but definitely worth it! Thank goodness for Amazon... the Sears Catalogue of this century!

I've eaten both the Quaker Steel Cut Oats and the McCann's Irish Cut Oats. Of the two I think the McCANN'S Steel Cut Irish Oatmeal, 28-Ounce Tins (Pack of 4) has a bit better flavor. The McCann's brand seems to taste nuttier.

As to the Quaker Steel Cut Oats: Not bad for something you can easily buy in most grocery stores. The cooked oatmeal is not mushy or pasty but has a bit of texture. Also, I had no problems with "rocks" as the oatmeal cooked up tender but a bit chewy.

Recommend with caveats given.

I've started to move to steel cut oats from standard Quaker oatmeal. I've tried 3 different brands so far including McCann's. I have a certain amount of attraction to Quaker's steel cut oats. In a sense I agree with the one star that said they tasted like rocks, because they are the most chewy oats out there. They're in a class of their own, probably twice as chewy as McCann's, even with extra water. So, if you like the chewiness of steel cut oats, this is your brand. If you find McCann's just right, this will probably be over the top for you.

Fix it how you like, I personally recommend raisins, brown sugar, and cinnamon, mixed with hot water straight from the kettle in a large bowl, then microwaved for 90 seconds. It boils for most of that, and still remains quite chewy, and quite good.

Peace Cereal Hearty Low Fat Clusters and Flakes Cereal Raisin Bran -- 10.5 oz

This cereal is made with the following ingredients, per the listing on the box: "Whole wheat flour, raisins (raisins, vegetable glycerin, vegetable oil [canola and/or sunflower oil]), wheat bran, milled cane sugar, barley malt syrup, whole rolled oats, vegetable oil (canola and/or safflower and/or sunflower oil), rice flour, oat fiber, salt, honey, annatto (for color), turmeric (for color), mixed tocopherols (natural vitamin E to maintain freshness), cardamom seed, fennel seed, fenugreek seed, nutmeg. Contains wheat. Produced in a facility that processes tree nuts, wheat and soy."

Each one-cup serving is 190 calories, about 80 calories more than Kellogg's Raisin Bran (KRB). It has more fat than KRB, but also more fiber and more protein. This bran cereal contains 2 g fat (18 calories), 44 g of carbohydrates (176 calories) of which 8 g is fiber. The fiber is equivalent to 32 calories, which are not digestible by the body and can effectively be subtracted from the 176 calories for carbs, bringing it down to 144 calories. It has 6 g protein (32 calories). That comes to a total calorie count of 194, which is very close to the 190 calories listed. The minimal difference is because carbs and protein are slightly less than 4 calories per gram, and fat is slightly less than 9 calories per gram.

This cereal is described by the manufacturer as "whole grain oat clusters," and given that the recipe for making them is different than Kellogg's Raisin Bran, it is not surprising that they don't taste the same as that product. However, in their own right they taste quite good.

This product is not sugar-free, but it uses natural sweeteners which are slightly less unhealthy than the white sugar, brown sugar or high fructose corn syrup that KRB uses. These natural sweeteners consist of milled cane sugar, barley malt syrup, and honey. The milled cane sugar and barley malt syrup are vegan, by the way, but honey is not considered to be vegan, so it is too bad the manufacturer added it to this cereal, or they could have had another selling point. In terms of health, though, the truth is, all sweeteners which are either fructose or sucrose, which each of the sweeteners mentioned above are, raise blood glucose levels. The advantage for controlling blood-glucose spikes that this cereal offers over and beyond what KRB provides is more fiber, more protein and a little bit more fat, all of which act like anchors on blood glucose levels, lessening spikes of blood glucose due to the relatively large percentage of carbs that any breakfast cereal contains, no matter who makes it.

A true advantage of this cereal over KRB is that it contains no artificial coloring, flavoring or preservatives. (Note that the KRB ingredient list does not admit to any coloring agents or preservatives, which I find very odd and very likely a dishonest omission--it's simply not possible that it has no preservatives in it of any kind to maintain freshness. Here are all the ingredients listed on the KRB box and on the Kellogg's website: "Whole grain wheat, raisins, wheat bran, sugar, brown sugar syrup, contains 2% or less of salt, malt flavor.")

What this cereal has used to color, flavor and preserve its cereal are an impressive list of very healthy substances. Mixed tocopherols maintain freshness. This is the form of vitamin E that is best absorbed in the body. Vitamin E is a powerful antioxidant that fights cancer and heart disease. Annatto and turmeric are used to color the cereal. Annatto is rich in antioxidants that function similarly to vitamin E, and turmeric is particularly well known for its anti-inflammatory properties. This cereal also contains cardamom seed, fennel seed, and fenugreek seed, all of which are strong aids to digestion. Studies on the action of fenugreek have also found it is helpful in controlling cholesterol and blood-sugar levels. Nutmeg has antibacterial action, in particular combating the bacteria that cause tooth decay. In addition, nutmeg contains compounds protective of the heart and that help prevent Alzheimer's. It also tastes great and, much like cinnamon, when used in baked goods or cereals, can cause them to taste sweeter so that less sugar is needed.

There is no mention of this product being organic, though the company makes this sales pitch: "By effectively combining the finest all natural ingredients, sustainable practices and regular giving to worthy causes, Peace Cereal truly delivers Peace of Mind in Every Bite!"

All in all, as high-carb cereals go, this one is a good bet. It is not safe for people with wheat or soy allergies, though, and diabetics would be better off eating a cereal with no sweetener of any kind and using a natural sweetener with no calories that does not raise the blood sugar like stevia powder.

This is about my 3rd or 4th order of Bunnery items..mostly pancake mix. The regular flavor is my fave but the kids love this one. All have seeds and are healthy, this has real coconut shreds instead of just that strong coconut flavoring some mixes have that is "off".. this is awesome. These breakfast biscuits/cookies come in three flavors oat, blueberry, and apple cinnamon. Each wrapped container contains four biscuits/cookies that are generously sized and oval shaped. The golden oat flavor reminded me of a graham cracker that had been paired with oats. The flavor was pleasant with a slightly sweet component. I think the product is best when paired with tea and a piece of fruit.

I did not experience increased energy and when eaten alone the product did not keep me full very long. When paired with a banana or apple and some almonds, I could see these cookies being used as part of a quick breakfast.

The product has a good bit of fat and sugar. As the product's nutritional profile is not presently listed, here is an abbreviated listing of one serving's nutrition:

I just bought a few boxes of Belvita at a local store and I really love the golden oat variety. The taste and texture are so good I'd want to eat them whether they were "healthier" or not (I say "healthier" instead of "healthy" because although they have no HFCF, contain whole grains and fiber, more "real" ingredients and better handling/baking, they are still a processed food). Anyway, I thought I'd see if amazon had a good deal on them. I'm floored by the price here! Over $25 for 3 boxes??? I think I only paid $2.99/box. Shop around, guys!

Yes, I know that "breakfast is the most important meal of the day" yada, yada, but I, like many who start the day before the sun is up, don't really feel like eating first thing in the morning. By the time the early domestic tasks have been completed I am usually in the car rushing for work.

I have found these biscuits are a great way of starting the day and can be eaten just about anywhere (ok, not while swimming, obviously). There's a lot of calories and oats in there and to me they do seem to be better than a bagel or toast, keeping me going until lunch time.

Get them in your local store, as they are unbelievably expensive on line.

I can't say if it gives sustained energy as I just had my first pack. I will say they were crisp and tasted great! I'm always looking for portable energy food that is NOT low calorie. These are about 230 calories per pack and since I take snacks like this hiking/backpacking, that's a good thing. So far, I really like them. Perhaps I'll update after I take them hiking and see how they hold up.

Bear Valley Pemmican Bars, Carob Cocoa, 3.75-Ounce Bars (Pack of 12)

I tried the carob-cocoa flavor. These are not at all sweet, even with malted grains, honey and raisins in the ingredient list. They have the texture and appearance of very dense, nutty brownies, but not a lot of chocolate flavor, rather a kind of carob/raisin/grain taste. These are for active people who want a quick, calorie-dense (440 calories per bar) meal from a bar made with natural ingredients. They are NOT weight-loss bars.

I like my coffee black and my iced tea with no sweeteners of any kind, so maybe that is why I like these bars. My wife won't drink those beverages without lots of sugar, and she HATES these bars. So, I'm guessing if you like sugar in your coffee, you should stay away from this product.

Got the idea to purchase these for a backpacking trip as a result of previous trips to Philmont. The bars were moist, but the carob is by no means chocolatey. The weight to nutrient ratio is ideal for backpacking, and in some cases can be used to replace a breakfast of lunch.

These bars gave me a stomache and indigestion. I am lactose intolerant. Nonfat milk is listed prominently as an ingredient on the package, but not on the website. This is unfortunate, because, otherwise, I think that they have a good high-caloric-density backpacking product. As for taste, on the trail, everything tastes good.

My husband tells me that these do fill him up, providing that he drinks a lot of water while chewing on one. One bar kept him full from breakfast until dinner which we eat about 5PM. He did drink a lot of water as others suggested, and he said he felt no hunger all afternoon. He is a believer that these will work for a day in the woods.

I 1st found this Granola in my health food store, then they stopped carrying it, thankfully I found it on Amazon as it is really a great tasting granloa that is organic and the plentiful bite of cherry, A sour cherry, makes this not just a great cereal but a good snack. The cost by buying it in packs of 6 saves a lot of money and also means one less thing I have to go to the store to get. The six pack tastes so good it goes fast. Earth's Best 3rd Foods Variety Pack, 6 Ounce (Pack of 8)

FYI: In the package, you get two each of: Bananas and Strawberries, Apple Cinnamon Oatmeal, Tender Chicken and Stars, and Vegetable Beef Pilaf. Good value, though I wish they came in packs of 12 like the 1st and 2nd stage foods do.

This is my favorite baby food line by far. They are consistent and readily available at just about any store. We got this variety pack on Amazon after already purchasing it from local stores. This is a great price compared to most stores and the variety of flavors is great. I wish they had more variety packs available for stage 3, but compared to other products out there it is hard to complain.

Now I am just waiting for the day that earth's best moves away from glass jars. Our daughter has started grabbing these out of her diaper bag and if she drops them on our hard floors it will break the jars. I have broken a couple myself dropping them from the cupboard on to the granite counter tops. I really like the pouches that some lines are doing and even the plastic containers that Gerber does. Glass is great because it is recyclable, but so are the plastic ones if you live in an area that supports that or you can reuse them like we do for storing bulk spices. That is the only the con I have and it is not even big enough to rate this product any lower.

Our son is now 11 months old and we've been using this brand since he started baby food. The taste is as close to the real thing as possibly. Other brands seem watered down compared to Earth's Best. The texture is smooth and flavorful. I like that they have a large variety of HEALTHY options that combine a whole variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and meats. In my opinion, there is no nutrition in mac and cheese so why bother giving it to them. They have different stages that seem to have been very appropriate for the eating abilities of my son.

The soup variety was tasty-Country Vegetable, Split pea/Carrot, Sweet potato Cinnamon and Squash Bisque. My daughter really seemed to enjoy it. The split pea and country vegetable varieties had nice soft pieces of carrot in there that my baby could chew. The sweet potato cinnamon bisque and squash bisque were thinner, but you can always add small pasta or cereal. Very convenient and flavorful for young palates!

My wife and I love these, and more importantly, so does our daughter. They have a good texture that lets her practice chewing with her limited teeth. I like that there's nice mixes of flavors, not just creamed peas, or pureed spinach, but chunky mixes of vegetables and meat broth. The first time we ordered these it took a while for them to come, but the next two times, they were sent right away. The food is actually good enough that I would eat it with a little salt. It's also nice that we can donate the bottles to our local art teachers for use in their projects.

Frosted Mini-Wheats Cereal, Touch of Fruit in the Middle (Mixed Berry), 15-Ounce Boxes (Pack of 4)

This is a really fun cereal to eat. You got the frosted side of the square which is delicious, and then you have to eat the non frosted part because it is attached to the frosted part. The makers cleverly decided to use fruit filling as the glue to hold the two sides together. This is the best tasting fruit cereal glue I have ever tasted. My 10 month old son watches me eat them with jealousy in his eyes and drool on his lips.

Saw this in the grocery store recently and was very excited. As a fan of the previous fruit filled version, I was eager to try a bowlful as soon as I got home. The mixed berry flavor was very sweet & artificial, and by the time I'd eaten less than half the bowl I'd had enough.

The flavors from before like strawberry and raisin tasted very fruity and complimented the frosted shredded cereal perfectly. When there is already frosting on the top side of the square, the filling doesn't need to be super sweet. It tasted like a frosted mixed berry Pop Tart, so I'm sure kids and younger folk will be a fan on this cereal, and perhaps that is who it is marketed to now.

Anybody else remember Raisin Squares? My mom would buy them for herself when I was a child, and I loved them so much, I would sneak them. They stopped producing them years ago, much to my dismay. When these mini-wheats with the touch of fruit in the middle came out, I was thrilled they are even better than my beloved Raisin Squares! They are a great cereal my mornings are pretty hectic, so I don't often have time to sit down and eat breakfast, but this cereal is perfect for popping in your mouth on the go. It's a great snack too. I teach middle school and sometimes I bring in snacks for my students this is one of their favorites, which is great because they are a fairly healthy food.

It's awesome that this Frosted Mini-Wheats Cereal is available on Amazon, and eligible for subscription the price is fantastic. I haven't subscribed yet, but I probably will I like to place an initial order before I subscribe. I was concerned because when my order arrived, the boxes were very out of shape so much so that they couldn't even stand upright and I was worried that the cereal would be crushed, but I've gone through one box already, and there were no more crumbs than usual. Another great Amazon buy.

I have been looking for fruit filled mini-wheats for about 15 years. They were harder and harder to find before being discontinued. These are almost as good as the original; my only complaint being that the original was not frosted, and I would prefer them unfrosted because the fruit adds enough sweetness. Spiced Tomato Jelly

I was given a homemade version of this and was excited to find it commerically. Unfortunately it came in a liquid state. Disappointing.

I bought the Tomato Preserves as well but that does not have the same flavor as this. This is more "country" and completely unique in taste. This on a grilled cheese sandwich is pure heaven. I like both tomato jam products for different reasons but the flavor of this one is amazing. I would buy this in bulk and give it to friends as gifts. That is how good it is. It is made for cheese, for sandwiches, it is a perfect brunch item. I love Barry Farm products and will order in the future.
