Don't pay any attention to the negative reviews. The currant flavor is great. Yes currents are a very tart berry, and I'm glad McCann's didn't ruin this by loading it up with sugar. The negative reviewers here, must have a sugar addiction. I've tried about every instant oatmeal on the market. Since I discovered the McCann's Artisan Collection, it is the only instant oatmeal I will eat. The conservative use of sweeteners, allow all the flavors to come through. You can taste currents. You can taste almonds. You can taste oatmeal. The flavors are not buried in a sea of sugary goo like most other instant oatmeals.I usually add about 1 teaspoon of Ghee (a clarified butter that is actually good for you)to the cooked oatmeal to add a bit more fat,and it improves the already great flavor. The addition of more fat will better satisfy your appetite, and a teaspoon adds only 33 calories.
Try it.... you'll like it!Both several flavors of the Irish Oatmeal and liked it the best. The others, not really. Never saw this at a supermarket and I wanted to try it. Even reordered more of this flavor.I wanted to like the Artisan creations especially an interesting flavor grouping like Black Currants & Almonds. I like to try different flavor profiles & often find myself the lone member of the house who likes something. This flavor proved to be too tart.
The experience started out cool when the hot water hits the mix, a dark purple color swirls into the oats as the currants plump up & a soft, slightly tangy aroma wafts up. After the presribed waiting time, I found the oats retained some texture not the mush of Quaker Instant packages but not the round, full oats of Umpqua in between the two. The oatmeal didn't turn out purple but had swirls of the color. Most but not all of the currants plumped up a bit disconcerting when you bite down on a leathery one. The almonds were slices & not too many. They had no flavor, were soft what's the point? There wasn't enough of a cream flavor to warrant the name unlike Quaker's Fruit & Cream flavors. No other spices I could taste no cinnamon or nutmeg. The currants weren't the sweet, plummy mini-raisins I often add to breads or cookies when baking. Instead they're the 'red currant jelly' kinds of currants with a sharp bite like unsweetened cranberries.
I think I'm too used to sweeter things in the morning or tart things offset with sweet components. I didn't try adding sugar & cream that might have made the difference.
