Following the directions out of the box, the mix worked "okay".
Pro:
Top quality ingredients.
Whole family ate until we couldn't eat any more. Still that always happens with pancakes and waffles. Strange.
Cons:
With no oil content, I had to follow the suggestion of adding a small amount of oil to each batch to prevent sticking. Even with this and a well-oiled Waring Pro, it still stuck. Not sure if this is strictly speaking the mixes fault though, lol.
The real issue is that this is an overly sweet mix. I would suggest buying one with less sugar and just adding additional sweetening if you need it. Try their multigrain component.
Building into the "pro" that they use high quality ingredients, I think they could have just gone the extra little bit and made this organic. Why not?
Conclusion: Good USA brand. Try the multigrain. Suggestion to brand: go organic. We have a big waffle maker -a Cuisinart 6 slicer that I adore. I love to make homemade waffles, but look to a mix to offer the homemade taste without all the work. This is the mix for us!
I can pronounce all the ingredients -so I know it is healthy. My kids like to eat waffles like toast -with a smear of peanut butter, so the sweetness of this waffle balances out the all-natural sugar-free peanut butter we use.
I usually add 2 tablespoons of melted butter to the mix to help with any kind of "sticking" to the waffle maker issue. I'd rather do that than spray with a non-stick spray.I agree with another reviewer that this mix is too sweet. A look at the ingredients and nutrition facts explains why. This new "Harvest" multigrain has 50% more sugar than the old Heartland Malted Multigrain mix (15 grams per serving versus 10 grams in the old version). In addition to sugar the mix ALSO contains dextrose (a sugar) and "may" contain sucralose (aka Splenda) and or acesulfame potassium (another artificial sweetener). These extra sugars and sweeteners weren't in the old Multigrain mix.
Before buying this I scoured the web in vain looking for the ingredients. Due to positive reviews I bought it anyway. For those who are considering buying this, the ingredients are as follows:
"Contains: Wheat flour, whole wheat flour, oat flour, corn meal, may contain one of the following (soybean oil, sunflower oil, or coconut oil), sugar, whole egg, leavening (baking soda, sodium aluminum phosphate, mono calcium phosphate), soy flour, malt, nonfat milk, salt, natural and artificial flavors, dextrose, may contain sucralose and/or acesulfame potassium, soy lecithin, caramel color".
The mix isn't terrible, although it's too sweet for me. However, it seems that some reviewers think that it is particularly healthy, I guess because it is called multigrain. Note, however, that this is not primarily a WHOLE grain product: the primary ingredient is plain white flour. Each serving has almost no vitamins or minerals, only 3 grams of fiber, only 5 grams of protein but has a lot of sodium: 910 mg. In fact, if you are interested in healthy eating, the Heartland Malted Vanilla mix has LESS calories, fat, cholesterol, sodium and sugar (plus has one gram more of fiber) than this Harvest Multigrain mix.
In summary, if you like your waffles sweet and don't mind the flavor of artificial sweetener then you may like this mix, but it's nothing special and doesn't make sense to buy in the belief that it is especially healthy. It is this line of mixes that made me get a Belgian waffle maker in the first place. This multi-grain lives up to the high quality from this line of waffle mixes. Even our kids liked the multi-grain, which is really saying something!!I had this waffles some time ago in a hotel and they were the best I had have, I had to ask the personal about the mix, and when I discover that they have the harvest one i decide to try it. They are crispy, spongy, delicious waffles, not too sweet as other reviews will say. I think this brand in general is the best for waffles and usually harvest multigrain products doesn't taste as good as the refined ones but this one does, you can go healthy without taste it :)
