PowerBar Protein Plus 20g, Chocolate Crisp, 2.15-Ounce Bars (Pack of 15)

This appears to be a new Powerbar with 20g of protein and 210 total calories. On the first bite, one notices a nice smooth texture, almost like a 3 Musketeers bar, with some crispy bits. It could be considered a bit chalky, but really not too bad. Then one notices that there's an odor which fills the nose, that is a bit off-putting as it doesn't really belong in a protein bar (quite possibly the ingredient maltitol, a sugar alcohol). Maltitol is the second ingredient, after protein.

I much rather prefer the previous Powerbar that had the same name, but had 23g of protein and 290 calories. The old bar has a nice texture, also with crispy bits, more chewy and satisfying, like that of a good chocolate chip cookie (though with a more chocolaty taste). The old bar also has maltitol, but it's the 6th ingredient, and does not have a sugar alcohol aftertaste! I really enjoyed the old bar, but it appears that stores no longer have new stock and are replacing it with the new bar. I'm going to have to go around and buy up any remaining stock, as I suspect that they've discontinued it.

If Powerbar has discontinued the old bar, then no worries, as there are lots of other tasty bars out there. As for your new Powerbar, thanks, but no thanks!

Edit: My body just reminded me that if you're not used to sugar alcohols, they can promote flatulence and loose stools. I had two of the new bars today. Didn't have these issues with the old bars.

Compared to other protein bars I have tried these were very tasty and at 20 grams of protein they are above average in protein content. I think the price is a bit high, but I haven't been able to find it any cheaper at local outlets.

I like the power bar. It does help fill you stomach in lieu of a junk food filler, but I must admit, it makes me a bit gassy and so if you are like me, be prepared for that part. Other than that, I really like these bars. I bought a whole box!

big improvement over old ones imho...you're supposed to consume these after a workout, but i dont care i eat one any time i want...;)
